Musicological banter

I feel like space doesn’t listen much to 80s British bands…just can’t see him at Depeche Mode, new order, Siouxsie, pet shop boys, OMD, love and Rockets 🚀, even the cure

It’s not his bag I wanna say

Depeche Mode-don't like (but my wife does)
New Order-one of my favorites (was out of town for their show last year)
Siouxie-don't like
Pet Shop Boys-love maybe a half dozen of their hits, but there's a big drop off after that
OMD-good, but wouldn't see them
Smiths-one of my favorites…would consider seeing Marr but haven't, Morrissey too unpredictable, his politics don't bother me
Love and Rockets-don't like
Cure-would see them but not at current prices and venue size
Big Audio Dynamite-loved them but seems like Mick Jones is done
Duran Duran-would love to Stubhub them
Loved a lot of 80s British ska…
Ok guess I stand corrected

Most people would probably only have heard two L&R songs if that maybe

So Alive
Ball of Confusion

I think they had a song on a John Hughes movie soundtrack but I forget which one. Something from Seventh Dream

I think I would put Express (cd version with Holiday on the moon) in my top 100 favorite records ever. It’s weird not that they didn’t sell more records but that they are not more critically acclaimed (in fact they are put down a lot). There are many big time musicians that are into them but the critics have their knives out for Love and Rockets. People like Maynard from Tool, Billy Corgan, Wayne Coyne (flaming lips), Frank Black etc. love them.

Same
I only owned the cd and was all excited for the vinyl reissue and that they didn’t include HOTM in the reissue was criminal
One of my favorites
Been wanting to buy the 12inch for a while

That’s why the set list is great.  I think the two times I saw them, they only played a few express era songs.  So for me a dream set list
Lord that is hard to believe

Nick Cave dancing at a Springsteen show and to Glory Days.

Thanks for nothing Yada…going to be hard to forget that

Let the guy have fun, dancing is better than prozac or therapy.

I'm more concerned about Chris Rock.

so oasis reunion tour pushed back to 2025

Liam apologizes for Noel's cover of "Love Will Tear Us Apart"

"I must once again apologise on behalf of my family for Rkids piss poor and damn rite blasphemous version of joy division’s love will tear us apart tut fucking tut SORRY"

YIKES this is lousy…
So with Blur and Pulp announcing South American dates, does this mean a US tour is in the planning?

A Blur and Pulp show in the fall at Merriweather would be ace…

Not even Nick Cave would dance to that.

Much better than anything off Magic Whip. That said, still annoyed at the prospect of new songs at Wembley next month . . .

called it ;)
I saw this in a record review.. it's pretty brutal

"It has since been deleted, and deservedly so."
Today I learned that the Mense@r song "Stardust' is actually a Bobby Gillespie diss track…

All this is bubbling up because of the statement made by Martin Duffy's son Louie regarding his dad's final days and how he was being treated by Primal Scream.

Stuart Murdoch tweeted about it here and there is a link to the full statement in the re-tweet.

Here is the link to the statement
https://twitter.com/SteveDuffy99/status/1666352994118500353?s=20

The statement is a long read, but bottom line was Martin was binge alcoholic and was on a bender when he fell and hit his head which lead to his death.  But, the slightly damning part of the statement is directed at Primal Scream who is now essentially Bobby and Andrew with session musicians backing them.  Despite being a member of the band for over 30 years, Martin had been sidelined as a session musician within the group.  Was getting cutout of songwriting credits and didn't see any money when the Primal Scream catalog was sold.  The only money he was seeing as being part of the band was when they toured, which was less and less and the non-existence due to COVID.
That is so sad….

Probably the truth is somewhere in the middle…..still, not a good look for Bobby Gillespie, one of my musical heroes
No doubt there isn't a second side to the story, but what a tragic end to a talented musicians life… what that poor son had to deal with after his fathers fall
Yeah…it sucks

I think at some point musicians need to be honest with themselves and if they are getting squeezed find a new career. The Scream really slowed down after the early 2000s…. There wasn’t much money to be had. I doubt Bobby is rolling in it as much as one might think…

Bands start out being a bunch of friends drinking and shagging chicks but a few years later it’s a business and you really have to take care of yourself and not depend on the kindness of others….

I mean complaining about not getting paid for Utopian Ashes? That record probably sold between 1000-2000 copies! No money in it

Honestly it reads like a bitter grievance/score settling and does Duffy’s legacy no favors… while I empathize with his son I wish he hadn’t written that screed
