Post Show Banter >>>>

I was about 10ft in fromt of the left side of the soundboard, just in line with or slightly to the right of the left hanging speaker array and it sounded great while I was there.  The vocals were clear, and all songs were easily recognized.  From a crowd perspective it seemed great for a sold out show.  There were 2 chicks near me with room to dance their asses off the entire show.  I stepped out of my spot twice to grab a drink and managed to get back to the exact same spot the first time.  The second time I could have but it would have required a few excuseme's so I just parked it closer to the back just to the left of the sound board where oddly I could hear the vocals much less than my previous spot a mere 10ish feet away.  All in all I loved it, was exactly what I was hoping for, I was still grinning a bit when i got home.

I do wish I brought my ear plugs along, I have  a bit of ringing - more than I have ever experienced when forgetting my plugs.
say what was the previous JAMC show in DC? Did they play in 2007 or was it for the Munki tour in the late 1990s?
I never saw them during their initial run, so I was pretty psyched on the show: great setlist I thought, crowd that was into it and some serious noise.  But then again, that's what I was hoping to get…I left with no complaints.

And how odd is it, after years of wasting my life posting on this board, that during the show I thought "huh, I wonder if Samantha is here".

Maybe Hutch and I went to a different show than some of you.

I can't imagine how you can complain about Jesus & Mary Chain being distorted.  Maybe it's a sign of our clean-cut-pop times.  My only regret of the night was that they were too crisp sounding and I wished there was more distortion.  And I recognized every song immediately and had to stop myself from singing along.

I was in the front row against the stage and I had plenty of room.  I was thinking to myself that this was the least sold-out-like sold out show I'd ever been to.  The people in the second row even allowed those of us in the front row room to dance.  (The photographers were a little annoying but they left early.)

I didn't think it was too loud, either, I thought it was perfect; no earplugs.

And the song selection was excellent.  Well balanced, I thought.  Of course I would have liked to hear more but if I had my way they would have played their entire discography.

I will admit that I was just happy to see them, as someone who is too young to have seen them back in the day.  I had just always wanted to see them and I'm grateful that I got to…I did not have high expectations as I know full well what reunion bands are like.  But they sounded true to themselves so I couldn't complain.  I hope they don't put out a new album just in case I don't like the new album…it's not like they don't have plenty in their repertoire already.

My complaint about the 9:30 Club is that I got shoved by two security staph at the end of the show.  I understand they were chasing someone, but it seems they could have used an arm swipe to move me to the side…I don't THINK I look so sturdy as to necessitate a two handed push in the back.  Jeesh.
and how weird that I was being chased…. ;D

sorry Samantha it really was not my fault!
Sorry to those music writers who are also members of this boards, but….

I always get a good chuckle when Hutch quotes music writers and acts as if it's proof of anything more than the fact that Hutch reads too many music rags.

It's true, I'm the biggest fan of Psychocandy, I think Darklands is very good but I don't listen to it much, and I think the rest is average and unremarkable. Fact is, the first line in any JAMC bio is not going to be "the band that released the classic album 'Munki'"

True, but it is also not going to be "The band that released the classic album Psychocandy and fell off the cliff.."

It just is not… You can read Ira Robbins in the NEw Trouser Press reviews or anywhere else.. JAMC was a seminal band and not because of only their first album. They had a very strong period until about 1992 or so… Dozens and dozens of singles in all kinds of formats and dozens of b-sides etc.. heck they have two b-sides compilations just for that period and they are good (Barbed Wire kisses, Sound of Speed)..

Now maybe to people that didn't grow up on them they are just the Psychocandy band that recorded that song used in that bill murray movie… but that is just for people that really aren't big fans of the band.

Always glad to crack you  up..

;D

Actually the Ira Robbins is in the New Music Tourser Press or what have you.. .I own a copy.. its great reading..and very funny…. I'm too lazy to go get it but later I'll post a paragraph on Soundgarden
Definitely dangerous to say "because all the critics love u in New York…"
I wouldn't say that critical opinion is always right  but I guess what I'm saying is that JAMC is not a band wherein the consensus is that they had one bangin' album and put out tosh for the rest of their career… a solid body of work is more like it.. Now maybe the young uns who sell out BRMC -total JAMC impostors- quicker than their teachers..well maybe they go back and are too lazy to listen to more than one JAMC record so they pick Psychocandy…but that is just plain lazy and doesn't really tell you anything.

I also think that these days music criticism is sort of superseded by rate your music. On that site everyone gets to be a critic and you can at least get to see what people n general ithink of the different albums.. I can't recall the ratings for JAMC but I'm pretty sure there are a few albums that do very well for them.
I'm going to disagree with you on that, Hutch. I believe JAMC's obit is, in fact, that they released one classic album and then some other records.

I bought the import You Trip Me Up ep in 1985 and then Psychocandy lp the week it was released in the US, so not everyone who disagrees with you is a dingbat new fan.

you may be right. i suggest you guys made a mistake in going last night then.. wait for the 30th anniversary of psychocandy tour where they will play the entire album or something!

;D
Are they as loud as my bloody valentine?
;D
Anyways point taken.. shame on JAMC for playing a cross section of their career instead of concentrating on Psychocandy. Heck, I don't know why they kept recording after Psychocandy.

Hutch, I want to see these videos you took. Don't worry, I can fill in the loss of proper audio with my mind.

By the time I found out that I could easily work the show around my work schedule, it had already sold out. Just my luck!
hutch wrote:the video i shot is distorted but my camera's mic aint the cats miau:)

weird thing is at the time, at the show, standing really close to the stage thought it sounded great but looking at the video i can recognize it was distorted

your two statements don't make sense to me: 1) your vids sound distorted because your camera's mic is crap, but 2) listening to the badly recorded videos you conclude that the show sounded distorted, even though at the time your ears told you otherwise.

Newbie.  I got Psycocandy when it was released in the UK.  Which I believe was a month before it was relased in the US.
Funny, I think that the feedback ruins the songs on Psychocandy. I find it unlistenable, despite a plethora of great songs. Darklands is my favorite LP of theirs. Followed by Honey's Dead. That was the first tour I saw them on. I missed the show last night because I wasn't feeling well, but I'm hopefully catching them Sunday in Chicago at Riotfest. I'll be curious how they manage in the daylight hours.

Aww I'm memorable!  And I agree with you 100%, which is nice to hear after the complaints.

yeah it was late when i typed

i agree.. it makes no sense.
i may upload one just to demonstrate how the vocals at least were super clear.. not sure why lagas wrote he couldn't hear them…i'm guessing in different places it is different.

My further 2 cents before I disappear again (obviously I'm procrastinating IRL)

I don't know how you could like Psychocandy and nothing else, and I say that even though Psychocandy is definitely my favorite album.  Something's wrong with you, I'm sure.  Love the noise, hell yeah.

I've been the fan the longest because I'm sure that despite the fact that I wasn't even conceived yet, I was a fan of theirs in the ethereal sea in which our spirits wander before birth.  I WIN.

You people just plain crazy, that's all.
My biggest regret is not realizing that Samantha would be at the show and not sending her a text to try and catch up beforehand. Anyone who knows her knows how much of a bummer this is.  It has been way too long! Pretty sure the last time I saw you was Grinderman?

That said, I also enjoyed the show and knew exactly what to expect because I looked at setlist.fm earlier on. Other than a few obvious flubs, I thought everything was played very well and was totally recognizable/audible. So yeah, thoroughly enjoyable show. I also got a chance to catch them at Coachella in 07 so maybe I was more aware as to what to expect than those who were underwhelmed. Except for Joe but that is because he is an ass. Oh and the Psychic Paramount set was epic.

Might as well talk about the rest of my packed weekend here. Mission of Burma get better with age. There is no other way to put it.The old stuff sounded incredible and the new material sounded perfectly in place next to it. Such an amazing band. What more can be said?

Bob Mould band set was phenomenal but that crowd was the worst in recent memory. It was a sea of idiots who had no idea as to how to conduct themselves at a rock concert. I much preferred the 2009 gig but through no fault of the band itself.

Manateees at Comet on Friday was a good time but I have a soft spot for psychedelic garage pop. First time catching Fordists in over 1.5 years so they were a nice treat. Everything I had to say about Sunn is in the RC thread.
damn, Samantha must be a looker!… I'm starting to regret not meeting her myself…

:D
