Nicole Atkins was pretty good as the opener.  Actually better than sharon Van Etten was, even though I like Sharon Van Etten's albums a lot.

SVE is best enjoyed on album.  seems like her and her band are too dynamic of an act to be able to pull off a fluid, live show.

Interesting.  I thought it might have been that SVE just didn't fill a big space so well and that she might have had an easier time in a club gig.  I was bummed to miss her recent show.

when i saw her a few weeks ago (neptune theatre - more or less a club), the music was good but the band was constantly shuffling around, SVE especially.  going from keyboard, to guitar, to acoustic guitar, solo, etc..

now i'm double bummed i didn't go to Queen..from MPP fb:

Went to the Queen show on 7/21. Great show. Terrible venue. 1) The venue sent out a gate crashers invite which I signed up for but they never let us first timers know how or when we could us it. By the time we figured it out, they "reached the limit and blocked us out 10 feet from the gate but still allowed Friends with Benefits member in - are you full or not? 2) People pushed through the line to "ask a question" but was never made to go back and allowed to stand in front of those who had been waiting for hours. 3) The big screens are outdated and provide poor quality viewing. 4) The food was way over priced - talk about gouging - OMG - 32.00 for 2 burgers a fry a coke and a water. Ridiculous. Robbery. 5) Underage drinking 6) Security staff and I use the term loosely were nothing more than what appeared to be 16 yr old slackers with no purpose whatsoever. There was a couple next to us that were drunk and the girl was pole dancing on the guys crotch and doing everything but stripping. She was placing his hands on her breasts as she gyrated and at one time had her hands down his pants. At one point she was attempting to perform oral sex on the guy. The staff member just stood there and watched them and did nothing. when people complained the staff member had to consult with another teenager and they decided that since they weren't physically hurting anyone - it was ok. WHAT ABOUT THE 10 AND 11 YEAR OLD KIDS SITTING RIGHT BEHING AND BESIDE THEM. Plus, I didn't come to the show for soft porn. Come on people. Finally, at the risk of starting a fight, other people said something and the couple left. I have been many places for many concerts for over 40 years –worse place I have ever been.

absolutely epic.

I WENT TO A CONCERT AND THINGS THAT HAPPEN AT CONCERTS ALL THE TIME HAPPENED IN FRONT OF MY VERY OWN EYES. ALSO, WILL SOMEONE PLEASE THINK OF THE CHILDREN!
I keep getting hung up on the part about "pole dancing on the guy's crotch"…

(NSFW warning for any 10 or 11 year olds who might be next to this thread)

I mean, pole dancing? I'm guessing the guy's dick is literally the pole. So this guy is lying on the ground, hanging dong, and this lady is sliding all around it, gripping it for support? Is this the gymnast episode of Seinfeld? And then, she proceeded to engage in, at least the preliminary steps for, oral sex? And security did nothing? #ThatHappened

american, ninja, warrior . . . all up on that weiner.
I haven't said this about a show in a while, but Beck was fucking AWESOME.

I kind of lost interest in those mid 2000's albums, but his showmanship and band is damn near perfect. Would see again and will most likely dig back into some of those albums I basically ignored.

+1

he has a heck of a band he's touring with..jason falkner..smokey hormel..etc….

I had not seen him since the 930 club in the late 90s…enjoyed this show so much more…

Was indeed a great show. But, alas, no "pole" dancing or other sexx law violations….

If I remember that show with him in the Yacht uniform…it was horrible, so not much to go up from.
I did catch the midnight V tour at the Pat Center and that was fun…

Assuming you saw a Beck show in the mid to late 90's, that would've been a whole different scenario to the artist and performer he is now. A lot can change in 20 years.

yada…is this you in your pre-dread period?

well I think I +1'd that it was an awesome show!….but hey if you who weren't there last night want to pass judgement on the show be my guest… :) just switch Beck for Replacements and you got yourself a nice Atomicfronty-post…maybe you're auditioning for the newly open position!!!!!! :)

as far as the mid to late 90s show at the 930.. I thought it sucked..as you know…so it took me a while to see him again…. I think his new album is his best so far….which was another reason I was interested in this show.

Whoa, what? How did I miss this? Atomic reviewed a Replacements concert he did not, in fact, attend? Rhett, atomic stole your move!
how was Sean Lennon's band?

but he only played about 3 or 4 of those songs… which I think is a good thing. Love the Sea Change/Morning Phase tunes, but they should be played in a seated show at the Lincoln, not MPP!
I found Sean Lennon's band rather boring.  "Oh, I predict the next song will be a mid-tempo, meandering psychedelic pastiche."  His girlfriend/band-mate is cute, though.

I highly enjoyed Beck, though the people around me became rather rude during the run of Sea Change/Morning Glory songs, which was my most anticipated part of the show.  Lots of overly loud chat and bustling for beer.
The Fresh & Onlys were great last night. Solid loud rawk. The Shilohs had 3 good songs and about 7 boring ones.

I think that one left a mark.  For the record I didn't say a thing about his current tour with your 'nice Atomicfronty-post'
well depends on how you read "not much to go up from…" I suppose…

sorry if I misread it.. you seemed to be saying that even if it was better that wasn't saying much given how bad the 930 show was…
I enjoyed Sean Lennons band - short but solid set.  The new album is pretty damn good  That was their 2nd MPP show in a year as they opened for Flaming Lips/tame impala last year

Yup, but at Strathmore they were not selling very expensive VIP tickets.  It also took a good number of songs for it to happen at Strathmore.  Again, I'm not complaining, it worked for me and I don't believe shows should have seats unless it is jazz/classical.  I was just commenting.

hutch wrote:
people rushed to the front at the Strathmore and it was clear Cave encouraged it and wanted it.. he didn't want to play to a bunch of people sitting down, etc..

you are dead on correct… and though I did not say it .. I was aware of that different reality..

I think Nick Cave should rethink things a little….its not right to take money for VIP tickets and then have this take place..

anyways I could not be at the show last night… I'm sure it was wonderful..his show at the Strathmore is one of the best I have ever seen..

I cannot help but ad that DAR is a shit-pie venue and should be avoided at all costs unless you like to eat shit-pie sandwiches..

Really missed being at this show.  Glad it seems like you all enjoyed it.  I was in the 2nd row at Strathmore and was glad people came in to fill some space as it was kind of uncomfortable being there almost alone!
