Heartbreaker, for me is the peak or close to it
so that almost the entire night with that as a focus, hard for me not to be biased
It had it's trainwrecky/cringe moments, but of the 10 or times I've seen him, easily one of the better musical performances.
Similar set up with him for last few years, tons of guitars, piano and weird homy accouterments.
But we noticed a drum kit?
that was a fun addition, when he did a rocking heavy metal dirge of bartering lines
if he would have just done that, I probably would have left happy
He did mention multiple times he was retiring and these were his last shows (except a Australia tour?)
of course he argued with the audience, some one shouted 'just play' and that really stuck in his craw
a few songs later, he pipes up 'just play' and launces in to this animatronic/devo-like version of Oh my sweet Carolina, didn't finish it but got 1/2 through, giggled and then came back normal and said I need to record it that way, then launched into a sweet impassioned version
It was an almost 3 hour show, with a 30 min intermission and probably 1 hour of talking…so I can see how that would grate on some here
It had a very tom waits feel, there was even a weird old timey telephone on one of the tables?
Oh we got Not Dark yet from Dylan,
and the Changeling by the Doors ? deep cut that I didn't know, but this description cracked me up
The Guardian described it "a James Brown-reminiscent funk-rock strut heavy on groove and grit."

That would have been impossible as it was the early show. We know they absolutely have to be off by 9 for the venue to turn around and open at 10. Had they not taken the early show slot they would not have been booked. Their draw these days in DC is not amazing. This was their first DC show in five years and they probably half sold the 930 if that… Who knows why they weren’t booked at Atlantis…maybe it was already booked by someone else…maybe they thought they could draw better after five years…maybe they just like playing the 930 which they have played so many times…..maybe they really do think last night was the last Camper show and wanted to go out at the 930. And at a show where they are celebrating and featuring the first album by playing it in its entirety -all 15 songs-you can’t get everything. I did miss Fatima.
I think Camper sold way more than half. I could see where there was some room to squeeze a few more people in, I'd guess another 200 or so? Garbage seemed a bit more sparse at Anthem (though of course they had more people as it's a bigger venue), and sadly that was kind of deserved, bit of a disappointing show. The energy and musicianship contrast between these two shows was kind of stark.

Unless Seth tells us we will never know but no more than 700 were there and remember comps. Upstairs only people on railing and downstairs pools of space both sides in back not to mention people were not packed in. The band definitely had guests cause I heard someone pull up to the ticket window with the four magic words….

I’ll call a missed opportunity that Durand Jones and the Indications or the openers The Psycodelics did September tonight, especially since Durand and Aaron already have that Maurice White/Philip Bailey thing going on. I bumped in a couple of The Psycodelics and they did it was discussed.
Anyways, great show and didn’t take notes but Space got a pretty almost even split with Aaron on lead vocals.

Fantastic show by Durand Jones and the Indications. They're definitely a band at the top of their live game. Both Durand and Aaron are such great singers, put them together and it's something special.
And the Psycodelics are the best opener I've seen in a while. Sorry to have missed the first 15 mins of their set. I hope they land a headlining spot at the Atlantis.
I tell you who wasn't a good singer….the drunk guy behind me who sang over Durand every chance he could. That is, when he wasn't telling the 5'6" woman next to him "You about six inches too short for me. I like tall women. " Gesturing over to his tall date."She know she ain't got nothin to worry about."
Shout out to the two pretty women doing the sign language. They were more fun to watch than Durand at times.
Finally, a thank you to my wife, who withstood the discomfort of the sold out crowd to stand with me for most of the show.

It was certainly fun watching the sign language interpreters ladies at the show they were getting down with the rest of the audience along with doing the interpretation. Particularly, fun was watching the one sign during The Psycodelics's cover of Prince's "Controversy"
Would say The Psycodelics were definitely a talented group although their originals were a bit lacking, but likely due to them learning the process. At least two covers during their set. They are either a four or six piece band I guess depending on the show, there is a second guitarist and percussionist that occasionally play live. The total stage blackout and pause during their last song was a bit over dramatic
Durand, Aaron and the rest of band delivered exactly what was needed in these time, just great soul and disco infused songs. Talented singers and musicians including a sax and trumpet players who both got nice chances at taking solos. First time seeing them and worth seeing again but not every time they come through I feel like. Just wish they were a little edgier at times live more garage I guess then basement. Durand certainly has all the soul singer front man moves down pat…

Geordie Greep on Saturday was pretty insane: frantic melodramatic speedjazz prog?.
The crowd had to have been half underage - lots of black "X"s on hands. Very intense, young and hyperactive crowd. Some dipshit tried a crowdsurf that nearly crashed into Geordie's mic stand.

Stereolab was solid. Just realized today the last time I saw them was over 25 years ago. Jeez. Glad I caught them tonight.

It worries me when Bearman doesn't express explosive joy from seeing a rock show of any kind. You doing ok?
