Concert "Review": Ryan Adams Aborts Parker Show After Seven Songs https://share.google/JE7DFe2DJKxeJfXEb

I bet Willie outlives him.
I'm not sure which is more ubiquitous. Missing teeth at a Willie show or body odor at a Wilco show.
King Gizz @ MPP

What a perfect evening at MPP! The weather couldn't have been more perfect. The crowd was light (not necessarily by BMI standards, but by how packed the venue was). I'd be surprised if they ever play there again… but there really is nothing better than a non sold out show at the IMP venues.

I hadn't been to MPP in I think two seasons but the renovations they've done are really nice.

1st set of music was very enjoyable, however, the symphony really added nothing to the show as the band is just too loud in general to be backed by a Symphony. Unless the band was completely silent, you couldn't really hear them. Second set wasn't my favorite, but good times all around. Had a Jeff sighting as he was providing a merch report to the community.

Not that I'm aware of… but they shouldn't do Symphony shows again
Neil Young @ Allianz Ampitheatre in the great city of Richmond

Pre show - as expected, traffic was horrendous getting to Richmond on a Sunday afternoon, it took about 3 hours. I was home in 90 minutes this morning. The weather couldn't have been more glorious for an August day in the south. I had some fears it would either be 110 degrees or violent storms and none of those things happened. Dinner at The Hard Shell pre show was excellent with quiet acoustic Neil being played in the background.

Now… the amphitheatre. I'm sure our friend and mayor of Richmond will have much better thoughts and insight on this, but to invest what I can only expect was at least 50 million dollars, a lot of strange elements to the place. I'm going to say I would go back, it's gorgeous, but some flaws.

1. Well, they only have bathrooms on one side of the amp. So… if you're in section 201 (hi!), you have to walk across the entire venue to go to the bathroom.

2. This was Neil's fault, but they sold NOTHING but "local" beers which were double IPAs and was the last thing I wanted to drink last night. Tons of angry rednecks and pissed off customers that there was essentially nothing to drink. I chose the $25 dollar double whiskey/ginger ale. I took a piss about 10 songs in and all of a sudden they had 24oz Modelos, but I passed.

3. The lawn… not that I'm a savage and would ever choose to sit there, but there was ZEEROOOO space for anyone.

4. Outside of the venue… There were probably as many people sitting outside of the venue on the extended lawn vs. the real lawn. If I was a resident of Richmond and broke, it seems like a pretty reasonable thing to do on a regular basis. I'd imagine some cop will ruin that at some point.

5. The sinks worked as well as The Anthem circa 2018.

I get that Richomnd's a stop over city, sorry Jules, but the calendar looks about as exciting as the Fillmore Silver Spring so my guess is most of the shows won't gain traction like Neil… I also saw that DMB played there this summer which I can't even imagine what a shit show that was.

Anyway… Neil.

I haven't seen him in 14 years and I'm glad I got to check it off the list again, but I don't think I'll see him again (and who knows if he'll ever actually tour again). He sounded amazing and his backing band was really good (still wish I got to see Crazy Horse instead), but I've probably had enough. He's another artist with such a vast catalog but plays the same shit constantly. Highlights were Ambulance Blues, Cowgirl in the Sand, One of these Days, Harvest Moon.
the end.
Jealous about ambulance blues!!! Full band, right?

Yes… the "chrome hearts" which is parts of Lucas Nelson's old band Promise of Real and then it appears Lucas was replaced with his brother Micah Nelson.
Yada is correct on every amphitheater complaint and those have been all over all Richmond social media since it’s soft opening. (They also avoided and shade cover even for the good seats.)

Hoping these are “year one of a new venue” blues and it gets better a la The Anthem but who knows.
Nice!!!! That was the big treat of this tour
Full Disclosure I did not pony up for to sit in the mezzanine in order to avoid a chance encounter with Space, but rather because I learned the hard way at the Alice Smith show that I can't stand for hours on end anymore and need a place to plop down.  Nice venue BTW

Was expecting a great evening and it was done with 5 of the singers featured on the two Boleros Psicodélicos album and someone let me take a picture of the setlist so I was able to figure who sang what.

After an opening instrumental Trish Toledo did Hoy Que Llueve (BP2) and also sang Puedes Decir De Mi (BP2) in place Gaby Moreno who wasn't at the DC show.

Next up Natalia Clavier who is likely best known for her work with Thievery Corporation, she did  Esclavo Y Amo (BP1), Tu Poder (BP2) and Adios described as a Psychedelic Turkish song someone had written Spanish Lyrics.  It was recorded with  The Echocentrics an earlier Adrian project.

Show continued with another instrumental break which was followed by Mireya Ramos who sang Tus Tormentas (BP1) and Cuatro Vidas (BP2)

Angelica Garcia was next and she did No Juego(BP1) and Ídolo(BP2), was likely the most expressive of the singers of the evening.

Closing out the set was iLe who really brought down the house with Bravo(BP2) and Mentiras(BP1) likely two of my favorite songs across the two albums.

Encore brought back Mireya Ramos for Volver which featured the two local musicians on saxophone and trumpet who were brought in for a couple songs taking solos.

Band was in fine form the only missing element was the vibraphonist who was with him for the Austin City Limit shows and does a couple tracks on the new one. Finally got to see Jay Mumford play drums as I've been following him for awhile because is work with the Du-Rites.  Adrian much like when I saw him with the Black Pumas hangs out in the shadows on the side playing those tasty guitar licks.

It was great getting to hear live songs from two of my most favorite albums of late, something with all  the guest vocalists and musicians involved with them I didn't think I would get a chance to experience live outside of seeing the Austin City Limits performance.

F'ing great show.

So much more enjoyable than the Wilco show I saw in Philly a week ago.

Kosmo covered the rest. I figured you were up top, I think I may have even looked up and saw you at one point. Or at least someone who could have been you.

Did you guys lock eyes?
Enjoyed all three bands at the Pretty Bitter record release party for their new album "Pleasure"

Pretty Bitter played all of the new one and ended with a couple old ones including closing with rousing version of "The Damn Thing Is Cursed"

New to me Flowers For The Dead are a DC based female front power trio doing 90s inspired AltRock/Grunge and really won me over.  I'm totaling enjoying their albums and EPs at the moment. https://fftd.bandcamp.com/music

Opening the festivals were Cuni local emo band whose record I've enjoyed but live somewhat disjointed, but they got the crowd moving early.

Despite all the shit swirling around the district at the moment, it was great to catch all these bands having a blast playing for an appreciative audience.
Lou Barlow and Bobby Bare Jr - Comet Ping Pong basement show

Well expectations were high, but muted as I worried it could be a train wreck.

Few stats
gorgeous night in late august DC, decided to just get a 30 min walk in pre show
Show started around 9:45, and no openers.

Show was billed as a song swap, which I think is a great format

pre show Bobby was walking around with a 20 something blonde who was following closely his every move

The boys took the stage on barstools and the room was buts2nuts, luckily some of the taller people decided to stick the the left side

I'm a huge fan of bobby and his best work is on YSCL and FTEOYL which we got some of the best
I'll Be Around, The Terrible Sunrise, Flat Chested Girl from Maynardville, Visit Me in Music City and Valentine and Let's rock and roll
no dig down, but can't get everything

I saw him about 2 years ago and started doing something he never did in the past is do: his dad's songs
his 90 year old dad asked him, 'why don't you ever play my songs' and he was like, why the fuck not, never wanted to ride his coat tails so was the very thing I was never going to do, but now that my dad asked, I was like, people need to hear these songs

Most people associate this song with gram parsons: Streets of Baltimore
Well the first recorded version was a hit for his dad in 66 (written by Tompall Glaser and Harlan Howard)
I of course know it as an Uncle Tupelo Song (via a coffee creek boot)

needless to say, it was amazing and the crowd was rapt

He also did  Daddy, What If …written by Shel Silverstein
This is a duet with BBJ as a 6 yr old and his dad.  Ended up being a huge hit, and he got nominated for a Grammy (but lost to the pointer sisters) but he was on He Haw and Old Opry because of that

He then goes on that lou usually does the little kid part, but he had a special guest tonight
The blonde 20 something was his 20 yr old daughter who did the kid's vocals in the song
So that was cool

There was some really good banter between lou and BBj
They were discussing how they met via GBV and touring together and Lou was like "I finally learned that Bob Pollard didn't actually hate me in real life, but was a stage thing, he feels it's import to slag everyone from the mic"
then then launched in to a killer cover of Game of Pricks

Lou had some great stories about coming back to Dino jr and what that was like and did some of the newer stuff, damn did it crush
they were killer
Garden was the only one I remembered the name

they finished with a great cover of:Cum On Feel the Noize
I'd like to say that 99% of Americans associate this with Quiet Riot, but it's really Slade hit, as Koz would surely comment

after the show, got to talk to BBJ at the merch table and bought a trucker hat (he had some GVB vinyl for sale too)
I was telling him I wanted to see him keep touring, and he kind of switched to a GVB response
"That band is never going to play live again, zero chance"
Was kinda shocked he lead with that, but I'm sure everyone keeps asking him
but then he was like, thing is we are still recording, so definitely expect more music, just no touring

So you were saying you wanted BBJ to continue touring right? And he jumped in with GBV answer?

hutch wrote:

yeah I was telling him I'd seen him a bunch of time and please don't stop touring, never mentioned GBV
Right

That’s too bad

You want some Bobby bare sr LPs?

yes,
sadly my only route to classic country is typically via covers…which I tend to like more than the originals, so there is that
only exception is Johnny Cash, I go straight to the source
