went to the gibbard double-bill tonight.  he was clearly amped to be performing in his hometown.  throughout the show ben regaled us with various anecdotes about writing the album in an attic apartment on mercer street, growing up in bremerton, what sub pop offices were like in 2003, etc.

the DCFC set was fun.  a number of little tweaks to the music kept things interesting for me.  a tad jarring to see ben sing the piano-heavy songs while not playing the piano…

the crowd stayed seated for the DCFC set, but jumped up and stayed up for the postal service.  the line "…from the cascades to puget sound" from this place is a prison got a big homer whoop.  local treat: jen wood was trotted out for "nothing better" - she originally sang it on the album (jenny only did backing vox).

caught the last two songs of the openers, the beths.  they were… fine.  the new arena, Climate Pledge, sounded damn good for a hockey/basketball shed, thanks to good design and copious amount of acoustic treatment on the ceiling.

Ypu couldn't pay me enough to sit and watch that whole video, but skipping through it, it's funny the person filming completely cut out Bobby Bare Jr.
Yeah he was hanging mostly against the side wall so was prob hard to get him on camera.

I was actually located in the upstairs section sitting at rail, luckily as I was feeling sick as a dog and would've hated to stand for 4 hours.

So I should expect him to send me photos of himself in the next few hours talking about his curl. Cool. Thanks for heads up.

I'm sorry, where are my manners? His LEGENDARY curl. My apologies for the oversight.

I changed my mind at the last minute and went to Gomez instead. Far fewer skin drums, horns and spears, but solid nonetheless.
Tool: two and a half hours of not one damn song in 4/4.  also, lasers.

Great show at DC9: Margo Cilker with Humbird.

Really enjoyed both. Margo Cilker was a mix of Gillian Welch, John Prine and maybe Lucinda Williams. Top notch songwriting, skilled playing, and a charming stage presence. I onle caught part of the opener, Humbird, but what I saw was promising.

Crowd was a little weird in that during the opener, it seemed like everyone was crowding he back of the room. I mean it was packed in the back and the front half of the room was empty. Then when the headliner cam on, there was a crush to the front.
U2 @ The Sphere:

- the band did their thing.  either you like them or you don't, and most folks here don't, so i won't carry on about how much i enjoyed the shows (especially the acoustic set from War on friday)

- the venue, tho… wow.  just wow.  sound is absolutely pristine.  hands-down the best sounding venue i've ever been to.  the visuals were overwhelming at times.  pix and vids cannot do justice to that experience.  definitely worth checking out if ever in vegas (they play custom-made movies in it as well on non-concert nights, if you don't wanna catch whatever band is playing there at the time).
Psyched to se them in Feb
Thanks for reporting from the field!

she's an incredible performer and somewhat underrated in the US.  Had wanted to go to that show, but just wasn't in the cards
