Thanks to Seth for having these guys play so many times. They clearly love playing the 9:30, as they went into in detail in their banter.

I saw lots of tall people and was hoping that one of them was Hutch, but don't think that was so.

Funniest moment of the night: At dinner, my wife set something paper (can't remember if it was the menu, or something else) on top of the candle. And immediately, our table was on fire. In her first attempt to put it out, she shoved the fire in my direction and set me on fire momentarily. But eventually all was fine. Though we remained candleless, thankfullt.

Made the last minute to head over to The Clarice to see Mavis Staples and was very glad I did.  85 years old and her voice is strong as ever, hoping I'll have the same get and go when I'm her age.

Backed by her band of 17 years, Mavis performed mainly Staple Singers classics, a couple from her recent solo outings and a most excellent rendition of Talking Heads "Slippery People.  Which is of course only fair…

She had two most excellent backing vocalists who occasionally took lead vocals.  While introducing them one of the names seemed familiar ,Saundra Williams and sure enough she was in fact Saun of Saun and Starr aka The Dapettes who of course sang backup to Sharon Jones.  The other singers name also seemed a bit familiar and it turned out to be Kelly Hogan who has performed with many artists as well over the years.

All and all a great show with a couple fun antidotes along the way…

The Jody Grind was one of the best bands in history.  The accident that killed several of their members was a tragedy.  Kelly Hogan is a treasure.

Really enjoyed the Phosphorescent show at the Club. Not too crowded and I was able to be near the front.

The last time they played the club, the singer's wife was on keyboards. This time she stayed home to take car of the kid(s) and was replaced by a very long haired guy with bad tats and a cowboy hat. But once that hat same off, bro had some of the best hair whipping skills I've ever witnessed by a keyboard player.

Manchester Orchestra when they first started out had a keyboard player that absolutely looked like he was having a seizure when playing. It was wildly entertaining.

Marky Ramone show was a lot of fun.  Got there later than I wanted to (wanted to watch latest English Teacher with my wife, but also we had early stumbled onto a protest of Tim Kaine's fundraiser at Port City lol), so I only caught a little of Dot Dash.  Never really paid much attention to them, but they were a good opener.

Look, I realize it was a gloried cover band, but when else am I ever going to hear like 40-ish Ramones songs played over the course of like 90 minutes?  He was backed (fronted? I don't know the etiquette when the drummer is the only real member) by a Joey Ramone cosplayer, a guitarist with an awful butt-rock haircut and a bass player that looked like a thumb.  Still, super fun time.  Kids next to me were probably not even born the last time I saw the actual band.

From Niger in the Sahara, came mesmerizing Tuareg guitar rhythms and staccato drum beats swirling through the cool night air.  Their sound was infectious and kept the multi-aged crowd dancing the night away.  My friend who'd been to Agadez was transported back immediately.  He aptly described the music as trance inducing.  Supposedly they're known to jam for four to six hours at weddings back home in Africa.  Current Space (affiliated with Ottobar) is a neat intimate venue. What a treat!

Bagley, you're post reminded me…how'd you like the dB's show? 

i'll admit I'm only really familiar with Stands for Decibels. I'm sure i've heard Repercussion before but not enough to really know many of the songs outside of Amplifier and Ask for Jill probably.  I don't think I had listened to any of the stuff beyond that ever.

Overall, I had a blast…they sounded great I thought and seemed really happy to be playing.  Only caught a bit of the The Mayflies USA, who I hadn't ever listened to.  Really enjoyed them, but I think they'll fall into the "sounds great but I never check out again" category.

Sorry to have missed your message before the show!  We'll catch up next time

Well, it was my first time attending a non-sold out show at the Atlantis.  What a pleasure!  So intimate and comfortable; and somewhat reminiscent of the original 9:30 where I'm sure I witnesses the DBs in their heyday. Basically I was there for Amplifier.  I thought the show started out slow and picked up about midway with Jill.  Lonely Is was pretty.  Overall,  Stamey's guitar work sounded good and there was some nice keyboard work towards the end of the set.  Holsapple seemed happy to be up there…got my jangle on so I was happy.
And yes,  sorry to miss you NKOTB.

I bailed on the Julien Baker Atlantis show.  Missed opportunity :(

Perennial / Ekko Astral / Bad Moves…line-up of the year.  Really stellar punk show from top to bottom.

Perennial blew the roof off the place.  Never seen them but enjoyed their records, but holy shit, what a fun band.  I can't recall being blown away by an opener like that in a long, long time. 

First time seeing Ekko Astral as well, though that album is probably my favorite from this year.  They're down to a trio now, and were fantastic I thought.  Super sloppy (in the best way) versions of a bunch of tracks off Pink Balloons, plus a new song and one (I think?) older one.  Really brought a smile to my face to see an almost entirely all-female mosh pit.  Can't wait to see their full set next month in Baltimore.

I've seen Bad Moves a few times already, and I'm still in awe of how much fun they are.  They've figured out the Three Secret Tricks of being good: Write incredibly fun songs, have fun playing those songs and let everyone in the band sing.  I think at this point, I like them better live than on record (and I love the three records).

X was great too.  They seemed to be having a blast, and all looked great (outside of Billy, who sits during the set, but mostly he just looked old).  I haven't seen them in 11 years, when the opened for Blondie.  Missed the last Atlantis / 930 shows due to covid.  Pretty much covered most of their big albums: 6 from Los Angeles, 3 from Wild Gift, 2 from Under the Big Black Sun, 4 from More Fun in the New World, See How We Are, 1 from Alphabetland and then 3 from Smoke & Fiction.  Nothing from Ain't Love Grand or Hey Zeus, but probably not surprising.  Still probably haven't dawned on my that I wont' see them again, but glad I was able to as many times as I said, even it was only 3 or 4.

State Theater is weird…last time i was there was the night Old Dirty Bastard died I think, seeing Stella.  I'd be fine never going back…the whole set-up isn't my thing.

some random thoughts on the Bad Moves/Ekko Astral/Perennial

Was excited about this show given how damn much I appreciate Bad Moves.

Perennial were up first and if you are going to go on stage might as well go all out… Plenty of antics, lots of banter and some heavy heavy riffs … the drummer was definitely their secret weapon

I was bit ambivalent during Ekko Astral's set much like I am with their record. on one hand they can be really on for me, but then a bit meh.  not sure if them being reduced to a power trio with singer switching to bass has changed their live sound at all.  Mascara Moshpit was definitely active during their set…

Bad Moves as expected brought the fun, here is a band who clearly enjoying playing live.  Right off the bat they are all smiles and just bouncing around like maniacs.  Caught some nice twin lead guitar early on and their sound has gotten more raucous over time.  Got most of the new album for the show with  choice  cuts from their albums…  Would definitely catch them again live and in different times could see them barnstorming across the country as a support band helping to amplify their fan base..
