Is there a thread for this that already exists? If not, can this be it?? If there is, can you delete this thread?

Anyway, Kurt Vile last night…

I felt bad for him and the band, literally there were about 50 people there max and I bet they actually sold about 20 tickets. I think the others were freebies… Good show nonetheless.

:o

That is an absolute shame.  Have never seen him and would have loved to go last night but I'm still on detox from SXSW.

This is a great thread idea, though.

It is a shame… Having a top 10 album in 2011 to literally not even being able to get 100 people in a room.
for what it's worth, kurt vile's show in richmond tonight (at a ~300 person club) is sold out.

That's good to hear… I'm assuming this show would've sold out at the Black Cat or R+R Hotel as well. B-more'd.

Same night as the Doug Aitken "Song 1" opening at the Hirshhorn, which was free.
Top 10 on what chart?

39 on Rolling Stone
5 on NME
9 on Prefix

#20 on Village Voice Pazz and Jop- over 700 critics!
So that's at least three people who are fans. Three music critics. You know, people who likely don't have many friends and surely don't have a partner to bring to the show.

well he does suck live.. maybe word got out after that horrible black cat show (the one he opened for thurston moore)

I don't know how else to explain it..
I think it was a last minute booking and Rams Head Live was the only available venue.

I think he and his band benefitted from RHL's sound system though there was a little bit of problem with the sax during Freak Train.

Overall, I thought the show was fantastic and they played for a good 90 minutes. No complaints there.

No complaints about the show Vas, just disappointing in the turn out.

Actually, one complaint… When he played acoustic with the full band, he was completely blown over in sound and you couldn't hear him too well on acoustic IMO.

James, I still get a good chuckle out of your top 20 2011 list. It fits a middle aged white dude to a T!!
Glad I can make you chuckle!

When I sent my top 20 list to my friends, most of whom are white middle aged dudes and babes, most didn't email me back. But among the few who did, I'd hear comments like, "Wow, I've actually heard of a few of those!"

I'd wager that most middle aged people, particularly with kids, probably didn't even listen to ten new albums in 2011, much less listen to enough albums both good and bad to compile a top 20 list.

And for the record, Kurt Vile is pretty middle of the road musically. I bet he'd be right up the alley of plenty 40something white dudes, if they gave him a listen.

Shit, I guess I have to go buy some music
Really enjoyed the Bad Religion show on the Mall. The rain held off through most of their performance too. I was surprised at how good they sounded (at least where I was standing).
I very much enjoyed The Black Keys and Arctic Monkeys on Friday night in Norfolk. (I live down here now, so I saw this show instead of the D.C. performance.)

Arctic Monkeys were a lot more energetic than I expected. Alex Turner had some charisma that I always heard was lacking in their performances. Stuff like "Pretty Visitors" came across really well live.

The Black Keys definitely can own an arena, no doubt about it. I just wish they'd mix up their setlists a bit or throw in a few more old tracks like "Stack Shot Billy."

I guess it's par for the course for bands to play their recent albums especially in support of a tour, but I agree.. the older stuff in their catalog rips. I'm sure we can expect a Keys tour years down the line where they play all of "Thickfreakness" "Rubber Factory" etc in their entirety.
Cloud Nothings were terrific on Saturday night.  Been quite some time since I've been so impressed by a band.  Great seeing them in such a small space!  Did anyone go to the ottobar last night?

I forgot how terrible the sound in the Verizon Center is.  Bruce was good, but the sound is just heinous in there.  Springsteen fans are adorable.  I'm not a big fan, and won tickets from the radio, but I'm glad I got to go.
