Steve Winwood

Oh it’s new all right. I just can’t believe anyone thinks he can still draw that well… in NY, for example, he is playing Capitol Theatre

Yes was an "identity band" - people's self-perception was wrapped up in their fandom (a common trait/flaw of prog rock band, RE: rush, tool, etc).  plenty of 50-somethings and 60-somethings with disposable income and a desire to relive their best years - or at least get a fleeting taste of them.
Are we talking about Steve Winwood or Yes??!?!

Yes, Steve Winwood.
aww crap, my bad - i posted jon anderson immediately before steve winwood.  my snot-addled brain (thanks to influenza A) got them scrambled.

i'm back on board with hutch: not sure who is filling these large venues to see winwood.
My wife's cousin is roughly 13 years old than her and I.  He's a big music guy, but not my kind of music guy.  He told me he cried when he saw Santana RECENTLY (I would to, but probably not for the same reason).  he was actually in an early version of Hootie & the Blowfish.  Apparently he quit because they weren't "serious" enough.  I'm told he's mentioned in a Pop Up Video.

Anyway, years ago he came up to me at a family event and asked if I had heard of this great band he was getting into…Collective Soul.  My wife to this day will bring up how amazed she was at my poker face: "Ah, yeah sure, those guys, etc. etc."

man, I don't think we have the budget to send you to all these shows

maybe we should ask Seth if he'd be willing to fund your torture?
One time I was talking to a guy I knew about soul coughing and I went off about how much I hated soul coughing

I guess I said some song by them I hated….
Man you should have seen the disdainful look on this guys face when he said “that’s collective soul!!”  Oopsies

I believe my first time at merriweather they opened for Natalie Merchant…but it could have been another craptastic band…

Are you sure he didn’t say Soul Coughing?

OMG this is actually the seed of a really genius idea. Seth should set up a scholarship fund for wayward boardies to attend concerts.
Reminding people about this thread…. 🧵

Take your bullshit here

Also the fact is the Sex Pistols existed before Rotten and after.

Now you can say they aren’t THE Sex Pistols but I actually think it will be cool…

It’s true that Rotten was the change agent but you can’t discount the songs. We know Jonesy and Matlock were important. We also know it was Jonesy’s band in a way it never was Rotten’s band.

I really think we are lucky Lydon is out cause he just couldn’t sing these songs. Already in 1996 he was struggling and that was nearly 30 years ago! He is better suited for singing the PiL stuff.
Where's the big Friday announcement hutch??

please explain what they were before?  They didn't record anything or have any impact until JR joined

let's be clear, I am going and excited

I do think jonesy is a big part of the sound, but he wasn't doing anything revolutionary remotely with his style/sound

facts
that show in 96 at George Mason kinda sucked IMO
but that show at the 9:30 in 2003 was awesome and yes johnny was not able to deliver the vocals as he did 25 years earlier
one of my favorite shows at the club
pink floyd wasn't pink floyd after roger left

<hides>
You might even say they weren't themselves until he got there.

<ducks>
^^ This is the weirdest reenactment of that Weezer SNL skit I've ever seen.

Billy Corgan

I thought for sure this was a joke with a SP cover band or something of that ilk

Well, it’s real

This summer, Corgan will tour relatively small venues with his new band Billy Corgan And The Machines Of God. The four-piece lineup will include the newly recruited Smashing Pumpkins touring guitarist Kiki Wong, as well as drummer Jake Hayden and bassist Kid Tigrrr. They’ll play songs from Mellon Collie, Machina, and the 2024 Smashing Pumpkins album Aghori Mhori Mei.
I hate to write this as Dean Wareham has been one of my favorite musicians for a very long time but it’s been a while since anything by him has really impressed me. I would say the last Luna records and the two Dean and Britta albums (plus the Warhol project) are the last things I have truly loved by him. Maybe a cover here or there. He has gotten into this Lee Hazelwood or Hazlewood rut where the music is just so damn slow. He’s gotten very far away from the Velvet Underground-like stuff that hooked me. Can anyone say his last four solo efforts even begin to remotely approach the greatness of Penthouse?

I think I have seen him live somewhere around 14 times which probably puts him in third place after Bob Dylan and GBV. From now on unless it’s a Luna nostalgia show am going to pass. I think his creative spark is gone.

It’s hard to remember but I think my top acts are
1. Bob Dylan 25
2. GBV 20
3. Luna and related 14
4 Ween and related 13
5. Wilco and related 12
6. Pavement and related 10
7. Nick Cave / Dead related but not GD 8
9. JSBX / Smithereens 7
11. YLT / Lucinda Williams / Franz Ferdinand / Willie Nelson 6
15. Paul Simon / Phish related/ Jack White related 5

And that’s the story of my life

You know what is odd,  the most popular tracks by Luna on Spotify

I could post it, but I rather see hutch guess the top 10 first
Including guetimate on how many streams

I actually really enjoy the last 2 solo LPs, and the LP with Cheval Sombre was good. I actually don't have a favorite Luna LP. I know everyone thinks Penthouse is the best, but it depends on my mood. On any given day it could be one of four of their LPs: Penthouse, Pup Tent, Bewitched, or Rendezvous. Every single thing he's released has something worthwhile on it. Are they all of the same caliber? No, but I find myself often playing a random Dean & Britta or solo LP just because it just sounds nice playing in my house with the windows open on a Sunday afternoon. It's that kind of music to me. I don't need to be blown away by a Sean Eden guitar solo, but Galaxie 500 can blow my mind too. And the song "Robin & Richard" from the next to last solo LP he did is a stunner.

I remember years ago, "Luna" was considered some other "Luna" from a different country…
