Just Announced Commentary - 2011 Edition

Nobody super excited about  Pitbull, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis appearing at the Preakness?

As someone who listen's to just about anything, even Smackie can say with authority that Pitbull is an awful talent, but has done an amazing job marketing himself.  I blame LeBron going to Miami as giving this staying power.

I will cop to not liking Macklemore and Ryan Lewis initially, but that Sax Loop from Thrift Shop is so damn catchy that I don't find my self changing the Sat channel immediately, but I rarely make it all the way through.

They're both from Seattle, if that helps clarify things for you.
There are a couple tracks that Pitbull guests on that I can stand, but his solo stuff is pretty unlistenable too..
Yes, I was aware of that. But so is Queensryche, and I don't see KEXP listeners voting them to the top spot.

For years, they were considered Indie Underground Rap.  True Story.

Queensryche or M & Rl?

because Macklemore and Ryan Lewis got busted paying a Sony distribution arm to gain radio airplay.  i.e. we're indie but it still took a major labels promotional arm to secure us radio airplay.
all the new venues competing for acts seem to be really pushing up prices…the hamilton seems a particularly flagrant offender..

toots and the maytals just announced 51.50 advance / 59.50 day of show… Toots has historically been a  $25 show ..multiple times at the 930 and one or two at the state theatre

les claypool..something called the duo of twang is like 41.50 advance/44 or something day of show

Do I win the furthest out Just Announced prize?

Seems that the Kennedy Center is saying that the entire 6-week run will sell out during the presale, leaving non-members without the opportunity to buy tickets directly.  Since when does a presale have access to all of the tickets?!?

ever since it's a membership organization.  you are free to join at any time.  the membership fees help keep the kennedy open, makes sense that their loyal supporters get first crack at tickets.
I heard that it was a total cluster getting tickets today.  It's also coming to the Hippodrome in Baltimore,

Has anyone seen Bob Dylan in the last 5 years?  Still worth going to see?  Last time I saw him with Willie Nelson at Ironbird Stadium he was not sounding so hot.
I was very disappointed to see that Justin and Jay-Z chose Candlestick for their Bay Area show.  Looks like I'll be making a trip to Soldier Field.

it took me almost two and a half hours of wading through a variety of error messages, but i was able to snag tickets.

This is cancelled.
Dang it.

Oh well at least there is this to look forward to:

DC March 30 (no venue listed PLUS that is SVI/Lost Rivers night)
Baltimore March 31 (no venue listed yet)

The Veldt (Apollo Heights)
the British shoegaze group Suzy Blue (Insect Guide)
panophonic

This is my killer weekend. Found out a week or two ago that Su was coming over from Leeds and was seriously considering a trip up to see her. Regret that I never got to see her with Insect Guide when they came over about a year ago. Would like to see Lost Rivers too! Found out this afternoon exactly when she was coming over and was highly disappointed. Just my frigging luck! I have to work that entire weekend, including days I normally don't work, as well as several others I work with taking off then. Not like I could find a replacement and I need the work too damned bad. It never, ever seems to fail. Whenever I consider coming up for a show, that's when I get scheduled to work outside of my normal days.

Would also really like to see The Veldt. Danny Chavis is one hell of a funny guy, besides the fact that I like their music. This is a band for Kosmo. Shoegaze, Kosmo style.
That is pretty awesome Animal Collective will be at 930 Club.  I hope I can get tickets, as I havent seen them since a middle of the afternoon set at Bonnaroo a few years back (and then Avey Tare/Panda Bear solo at the Ottobar, still not the same).  Anyways, it would be nice to go to the club again. Its been a long time.
That first Panda Bear solo Ottobar show was transcendent. And wzt hearts opened which was equally transcendent. Wzt hearts set may have actually been my first noise set ever.
I do not understand Animal Collective.  Liked their second album okay, but overall, I find them incredibly annoying.

cool… i was contemplating NYC for this.  looks like i might be going to my first FSS show… held out this long.
The National Theatre is under new management and will apparently begin booking concerts.

The best seats for Morrissey are $125.

Me too.
Is that Destroy Angels album any good? I assumed it was Trent doing his trippy ambient (boring) stuff.
Not trippy or ambient at all (for the most part).  Their first EP was free and can be found online.

Here is their second:

(oops spoke too soon, never heard this before, and it has some pretty ambient/trippy parts)

And the LP comes out tomorrow:

To me it is a natural nine inch nails continuation.  You can definitely feel the "Trentness" of it, kind of like the stuff he did with Saul Williams.  I personally think it is great.
