Looks like someone sold you some mediocre beer. Other than their excellent orange whip IPA, i've found all their beers to be mediocre.

not talking about the taste dude…talking about having your esophagus almost swell shut..

i've had this happen before with some beers…

for the record i really like the mad fox place…great burgers… and some of their beers are up my alley (defender american pale ale for example)

does this often happen with belgian-style beers?

diabolik, a belgian strong, will have a higher content of phenols and esters, mostly due to the yeast used.  a place like mad fox may let more yeast sediment stay in there beer.  i doubt they filtered this, since the cloudy color is often preferred with belgian styles. you're likely drinking a higher content of phenols, esters, and yeast in this beer.

so for health effects…

an allergy to the esters, or ethyl acetate, will cause digestive issues.  probably not your issue.

for phenols… there's probably a book to write about phenols and their potential effects.  i'd imagine your issue lies with the high phenol content, but then again, you ingest plenty of phenols from other sources (fruits, vegetables, etc).

i'm not incredibly well-versed in the health effects of beer, but i'd steer clear of the belgians.  or watch the effects closely.
yeah, i was thinking the same thing - reaction/allergy to the yeast or its by-products.

do you drink belgian beers regularly?  do they have this effect on you?
I had a Weistephaner Hefeweizen last night that left me eeling like I had a brick in my stomach.  :(

If the beers below impress you, then by all mean go.

But if you:

a. detest crowds of drunk mainstream twentysomethings or
b. have better beer in your basement

then don't go.

Here are some of the beers that the breweries are bringing…
Smuttynose: Old Brown Dog, Finest Kind IPA
Victory: Headwaters Pale Ale, SwingSessions Saison
Devils Backbone: Vienna, Eight Point, Congo, Schwartz Bier
Troegs: Perpetual IPA, Troegenator Doublebock, Dreamweaver, Wheat, Hopback Amber
Widmer: Pitch Black, O'Reilly Rotator, Hef, Columbia Commons
Redhook: Pilsner, Audible, Longhammer
Kona: Koko Brown, Longboard, Firerock
Omission: Lager, Pale Ale
Goose Island: Summertime, Honkers
Shock Top: Lemon Shandy, Apple Crisp
Bold Rock Cider: VA Apple, VA Draft
Boulder Beer: Hazed and Infused, Mojo, Sweaty Betty

Looking at that list gave me the realization inBev has made it nice to pick up decent beers during a Wizards/Caps game at VC.
Redhook, Kona, Goose Island, Kona, Shock Top are all on draft.
Wasn't long ago it was just Bud/Coors/Miller.
Now you can also get inBev Belgium selections - Leffe, Hoegaarden, Stella Artois, etc.

I don't drink Belgians too much.

This Diabolik doesn't work with me.. I must be allergic to something in it..
I wonder if these guys will sue them over the name. Can't they be a little more original?

I drive by this every day on my way to work and have been checking it out.  It seems to be coming along pretty nicely.  Right around the corner from the distillery that opened a few months back and really not far from DC Brau; strange to think we didn't have any of this stuff in DC not long ago.

Nevertheless, I'm looking forward to it, especially if they do make a foray into sour beers.
amazing..for two decades DC didn't have one brewery..now a new one opens up every week….

you could say the same thing about wine and virginia, from 10 years ago to now.

well I went to the a wine festival in Virginia somewhere off 66..they still do it.. we went there about 15 years ago and it was full of virginia wine growers…from when I first set foot in Virginia back in 89 I knew that Virginia produced wine…

but DC ..I don't think they've had a brewery in decades..even FOggy BOttom Ale I think was produced elsewhere although considered the local beer..
We have a wine bar in Berlin that sells only Maryland wines. A nice little place and I like the concept, except that I've yet had a Maryland wine that I've liked. They do much, much better with their beers.

Flying Dog Brewery Presents "Festival De Cans" with
Escort
Thu 3/28

FD will be unveiling the first version of Natural Selection Ale, a collab with Evolution Brewing. http://flyingdogales.com/blog/brewery-news/

"Each participating brewery will also serve their canned beer selections, some of which is not typically available in Washington, DC."
http://www.thebarleyblog.com/2013/flying-dog-presents-festival-de-cans-a-craft-beer-and-film-festival/

they'll be showing a movie and "classic beer commercials".  Escort to go on at 10.
on saturday night brennser graciously hosted a bottle-sharing party at his place.  during the course of the evening we enjoyed:

- a taste-off between the two versions of International Arms Race, a gruit made by both Flying Dog and Brewdog.  there was no clear consensus on who's version was better, but folks did agree that these were less than mind-blowing.  file under "interesting and glad i tried… somebody else's bottle" ;D  the provider of these bottles was tom, the editor of http://americancraftbeer.com/. ;

- james ford brought what was arguably the highlight of the night: a 2 year-old Deschutes' The Dissident.  i'm not a sour guy so the fact that this might have been my fav is really saying something.  for kicks, check out the review by"BrewSnob" on the first page of BA.  Ford also brought a Zombie Dust and another pale ale that escapes me at the moment.

- stevewizzle brought it strong with his homebrewed chocolate stout, a small growler of DC Brau Colliding Hemispheres (a just-released dark "IPA"), and a Sam Adams 2011 Infinium (a belgian strong that i thoroughly enjoyed).

- brennser has an amazing cellar, it seems that every time we mentioned a style he'd ask if we'd like another version.  sour?  he returned with a Russian River Supplication (which we chose over the Beatification).  Stout?  he produced Upright Brewing's Oyster Stout (mmm, salty).  IPA?  out came a Pliny the Elder (the nose… the nose!), then backed that up with a Marin White Knuckle.  etc.

- my contributions were a bomber of my Mosaic IPA (again, well received) and a Chimay Spéciale Cent Cinquante (this limited release was the abbey's first new recipe in something like 50 years).

i'm sure i'm forgetting some… gents, please chime in.  this was easily the biggest & best assortment of beers i have ever had in one sitting.  although we were only getting 2-3 oz pours of each one, i was feeling pretty damn toasty by the end.
