The Beer Thread

Ridge Runner for the views and the beers are ok. Brothers for the best beers.  Unfortunately, the mountains have not honed the craft of excellent beers, just yet.

Also, hopslam just hit my beer shoppe.

Not getting Slammed this year but it is time for some Nugget Nectar
Asheville, NC: if you're going to hit up one brewery there it should be . . .

It depends on what you're looking for.

I liked New Belgium for the "scene." Great tour with good amount of free beer. Nice river views from the tasting room. Large outdoor lawn with food trucks to play on with your kids or dogs or significant other.

I liked Wicked Weed Funkatorium for the beers (almost all sours, if that's not your bag, this is not your place), though some would now object because they've been bought by AB-Inbev. I liked WW Funkatorium a lot more than their main Wicked Weed brewpub (which features their whole range of beers though only one or two sours at a time)….much more relaxed atmosphere at the Funkatorium.

And Burial for their hoppy beers, though they're probably not in the same league as the Veil (I didn't actually go there, but have had some of their beers.)

Pisgah Brewing over in Pisgah was fun if you're into watching open mic Grateful Dead cover bands and making fun of hippies (they also have a larger concert area featuring nationally touring bands, bookings tend toward the jammy.)

Some people rave about Sierra Nevada over in Mills River, but I found the atmosphere too sterile and palatial.

And Fonta Flora Brewing, in Morganton, which may or may not be on the drive to Asheville, was a very nice stop off place. Laid back vibe and excellent beers.

I have my eye on Alewerks Bitter Valentine. First time ever in four packs of cans. Then again, I have so much Aslin and Veil in my fridge I should probably skip it.

Can you buy beer to take home at these, or are they strictly tasting events? Lawson's will be there and those tickets are cheaper than a trip to VT.
ALSO CLOUDBURST

MUST GO.

Strictly tasting… however, you could sit in front of the Lawsons table for the entire night if you wanted.

Additionally, there's probably a pretty good chance Lawsons will host an event in DC that week if you want to see Space.
Yay! It was touch and go there for a while, but looks like I'm headed to Portland next week with a mostly empty suitcase, with a side trip to the coast for a day.

Work related trip to OR. Tacking on an extra self day to drive to the coast.

Tentative beer related stops, time permitting:

Great Notion
Upright
Cascade
Hair of the Dog
de Garde
Pelican
maybe Laurelwood at PDX ariport if I'm hungry/thirsty after being on two planes
Apex
Beer Mongers

Any must hit places I'm missing? Any food recommendations (that may or may not also have good beer?)
Hazy little thing
Tangerine express
Puff
i bought this at my local beer storre,

cascade  -  one way or another 2016 (with "marionberries")

perennial  -  sump, imperial stout

two roads  -  two juicy, dipa

troegs  -  first cut ipa, with mango

flying dog  -  alpha initiative # 1  pilot series ipa  (pretty good for flying dog)

bells  -  larrys latest  sour ale  (ok, not a super sour experience)

victory  -  blood orange ipa
also got my first growler from pen druid.  something called Jupiter, a wild double ipa.  it was super cloudy and had a strange bitterness to the ipaness of it, so i thought it was good, but not their awesomeness best.

Trip report:

I was in Oregon for five days, and didn't have a single West Coast IPA. Thanks Aslin, Veil, etc for completely changing my beer taste.

Great Notion-excellent beers (hazy IPA's, stouts, sours) and food, though I couldn't finish my second flight due to a full stomach

Upright-fun basement space in nondescript building, beers very good

Cascade-love, love, love their sours, Sang Noir paired with the cherry chocolate bread pudding was divine.

Hair of the Dog- only stopped in for free samples as part of the Zwicklemania Festival, can't complain about free though their malty, high abv beers are becoming less and less my thing.

de Garde- I brave driving over mountains through a snowstorm driving a tiny Hyundai Accent to get to the coast, and the beer at de Garde (and ice cream at Tillamook) almost made up for it.

Pelican-didn't make it there

maybe Laurelwood at PDX airport if I'm hungry/thirsty after being on two planes-didn't even see it

Apex-walked in and walked out, didn't like the vibe, even passed up on having a Pliny on draft

Beer Mongers-had a good Crooked Stave sour while watching the NBA three point contest

Modern Times-didn't even know it existed before going on trip. The Modem Tones Bourbon Vanilla Stout ranked as one of my all time favorite stouts. Excellent hazy IPA's a  good Berliner too. And their small all-vegan menu was a nice fuck you to all of the meat-centric brewpubs out there.

Baerlic-I was walking to Apex and Beermongers, and saw this place…decent beer, boring atmosphere
So I walked into Whole Foods in Portland and checked out their beer selection and noticed some Russian River sours. As soon as I load the first one into my basket, a girl worker comes out of the break room nearby and goes "Woah, that's a good one!:

Then I go to checking out and the checkout boy (actually he was about my age, so more of a checkout man) comments on the Russian River beers "Looks like they're trying to give PFriem a run for their money."

I ask "What do you mean."

He replies, "The bottles (small, caged and corked), looks like they're copying Pfriem."

I reply, "Uh yeah, or maybe vice versa."

Then the guy behind me asks, "What Russian River beers are those?

And I reply "Oh I grabbed a couple of their sours."

And he goes "When did Russian River start making sours?"

And then it was a palm to my forehead.
Are there any good Mexican beers??

Stone Xocoveza and Aslin Mexican Hot Chocolate.

It looks like there are a few actually made in Mexico. Good luck at getting any of them.

But I mean in the Mexican style…light summer beers
