The Beer Thread

I may have had something this weekend rarer than a Founders CBS - partook of several glasses from a bottle of 1944 Sandemans vintage port - not sure what my expectations were but it was very good

a little off topic I know but seemed a bit much to start a Port Thread  ;)

vfn!!!!!

(very fucking nice)
Wow, is every band getting a beer named after them? I'll take this one over Pearl Jam and Clutch, thanks.

After listening to Achtung Baby while I was making dinner, and watch Fast Five on dvd, I decided I needed even more cheese in my life, so opened some brie (and some Theo dark chocolate). What better way to wash it down than with one of these?

Final decision: This one beats Founders CBS (and Backwoods Bastard)

I'd agree

Tonight it's Little Sumpin Sumpin with the salmon salad. No stouts.
Thought the KBS wasn't available til march
We go through ours slowly. Two (2011) bottles down, six to go.

dogfish head  120 minute ipa
vfn walkie, vfn!

Did you trade for these or stumble across the one retail outlet in the country that had not sold out of CBS?

The Harvest Ale is amazing btw
there was a store way out here in the boonies that had a proud 1 day sale offering of these rare finds to those lucky enough to know about it.  they had tastings and free food and soup.  it was a blast for a country store proving that they can keep up with the big dogs.  and my partner yelled when i told him how much i spent on beer in one day.

other recent purchases:

sierra nevada  ovila  dubbel

stoudts  double ipa

ayinger  altbairisch dunkel  (horrible)

rj rockers  bald eagle brown

olde richmond  batch 11  ipa

epic  fest devious

otromundo  red ale

abita christmas ale
stupid question, i'm sure.  i was only allowed 1 tall bottle of cbs and it was already cold so i had no choice but to keep it cold.  how long do beers that can be kept if you store them correctly, last once they are cold.  i keep wines in my kitchen wine fridge for years and they are ok . . . does the same logic apply to beers, or do they expire quicker in the cold?
Not stupid question.

I was in one of the top bottle shops in Portland and there were a number of high abv beers i wanted to bring home on the plane. But they were sitting in a cooler already cold. Guy told me that warming them back up in my suitcase wouldn't harm them. I don't think i've tried any of the ones that were cooled down. So thake that fwiw.

i've always been told that with beer . . . once it is cold you have to keep it cold, or it alters the taste and not in a good way.

could not resist trying a founders harvest ale.  good lord.  wow.  amazing.  wet.  a taste like that can come from a bottle?  so fresh and so clean.  must stop myself from having another.
re: Founders Harvest - drink it now while its still fresh
Tip o' the Day.

Letting beer get warm after being cold is completely fine, it's the exposure to sun light that can f' it up.

thanks partner!  you are correct . . . but now i am reading that beers should only really be kept three to four months, tops.
stouts will hold up longer than that - barleywines too
i also remember reading that most stronger beers - say 8% and above - are good candidates for aging.

a while back TJ's had a special on a Unibroue variety 4-pack.  either someone told me, or it is written on the box (will check tonight) that the beers would improve with age.  i have one such pack in the basement, i plan on taste-testing the beers vs. un-aged bottles at some point next year.
