Dropping Like Flies

Ok proves my point even more….very late bloomer

(Although my memory isn’t quite what it used to be)
When I am working tickets people tell me I remind them of Mick Jagger or Bob Dylan

That tells you something

so I never did look up the history, but decided to do a little research
it's really hard to find info on Kevin Thatcher for some odd reason?

I did learn something new, while it was in fact a popular skate mag that influenced millions (and now the logo is hot with Beebs and other clebs who don't skate)

but came to find out that it was not started with the punk/diy attitude it came to be known by, but as a way to sell Independent trucks (always my fave, but I see now I was played)

This is the first issue of thrasher ever released. My uncle Kevin Thatcher helped put it together and drew the cover art. Thrasher was originally started to be the sole advertising platform for independent truck company since they had very few places to advertise. The magazine was assembled in my grandma's house in Los Gatos, CA which constantly hosted pros of the time and the gnarliest punk bands as well.

Even worse they copied the logo of the other truck company
Action Now was the magazine that declined to publish an Independent ad featuring a topless girl with stickers over her boobs.
They were a shitty corporate "multi-platform" mag that evolved out of the closure of Skateboarder magazine. They featured some skateboarding alongside other like BMX, hula hoops, and even horseback riding(!)
Fausto said "fuck you" and went and started his own skate mag with KT as the original editor..
As the ultimate "fuck you" to Tracker, the Thrasher logo KT designed was actually derived from a Tracker ad that ran in Action Now:

BONUS TRIVIA NUGGET: KT told me once that he added the curve in the logo to emulate the lip of a pool.

Dick Dale
Almost went and saw him at the Birchmere years ago…more of a novelty thing than a fan but still sad. RIP
I was in Boston with my mom a few years ago and he was playing in Cambridge. Ny wife suggested i take my mom and try to get her a date with him. Alas, we did no go.
