Dropping Like Flies

Back when Hulk Hogan was WWF heavyweight champion and cultural icon it was rare to see him actually wrestle. I don’t remember ever seeing him on Saturday Morning WWF or Saturday Night Main Event.

Then when you did see him actually wrestle he was shockingly mediocre. Barely moved. And he’d like bop a guy on the head while stomping his foot and it would be sold as the most powerful, violent move possible.

And you believed it. Because he was incredible at acting his schtick and selling.  A character in a drama. John Wayne wasn’t a great actor but he was a great character. Same thing.

hogan didn't engage his opponent - he engaged the crowd.  the hand behind the ear, demanding the noise.  the raising of the fist while pinned by an opponent.  the self-slaps to the face, looking to the crowd for energy.  his opponents, and the moves required to defeat them, were entirely secondary.

Damn, that Bob Mould was such a good script writer.

Just can’t believe he died only two weeks after his final show…makes you wonder….

By all accounts he sounded good, right??

eh not really.  subjectively, for a 76 year old former addict with advanced Parkinsons, yeah he sounded good.  but objectively, he sang like a 76 year old former addict with advanced Parkinsons.  he couldn't stand, his voice was shaky, and he was out of tune at times (worse offender was mama i'm coming home - yikes, and that's with zakk helping out on vocals).

he performed about as good as i could have hoped for.  i didn't expect a stellar performance - this was a nostalgia set with a lot of leeway given.  still epic IMO.

but you know who did sound amazing?  yungblud singing "changes".  what a performance.  absolutely nailed it.

i had barely heard of this guy before - i knew his music was in a pop-punk vein, and was aware that he collaborated with Halsey on a dcfc cover (dated her too).  tom morello, the musical director for the ozzy/sabbath show, had reservations about including this kid - he wasn't associated with metal and wasn't sure how he'd fit in with slayer, metallica, etc.  apparently yungblud told morello "put me in and give me the ballad - i'll win over the crowd."  mission accomplished.  shades of mercury, IMO.

Why are they doing a Bowie song at an Ozzy tribute?

they were released only a year apart, but bowie's changes came before sabbath's changes

Guys, get your annual prostate exam and PSA screening.
Dave Edmunds?  Might have been premature but he had cardiac arrest and doesn't look good.  Hopefully he pulls through

What an incredible guitarist.

whoa, I hadn't heard his name in decades and just a few hours ago I read
Stray Cats is the first studio album was produced by Dave Edmunds.his early support was crucial to their breakthrough
Edmunds is a legend in my book. Let’s hope he pulls through but my understanding is he has been in ill health for decade which pushed him off the road a quarter century ago.

The Rockpile stuff is legit. The only album released under the name is a top 100 for me. If you don’t have it happy to get a copy to you. Rockpile backed Edmunds and Lowe on a few great records and were incendiary live. Wish I could transport to that 1980 NYC show were Keith Richards showed up and jammed with them on a few songs.

I saw him solo at Rams Head in Annapolis decades ago and was just amazed by his guitar work. I hadn't realized what a brilliant guitarist he was/is.
I don't know how accurate that article is. I haven't seen it reported anywhere else and if you read his wife's Facebook post it was very confusing.  Her Facebook page hasn't announced his death

Well good news for all the Daves Edmunds all around, I guess. I spent the day thinking he was the other one in the Eurythmics, so best wishes to Annie Lennox too, in this, the most difficult of times.
