Don’t think they played around here much, but there was a memorable night with several boardies in attendance at Iota with Reigning Sound where when they were to start their set the band had to wake up Rachel Lee who was asleep in the van..

Saw them at the club opening for the mc-5 show, once at rnrh, I think once at the black cat and for sure, once at Iota, hutch was definitely at that one.  He got a great autograph from her on a record, he should post that
Woke up and am still floored by this news…

Admittedly the “band” had been down to Rachel and Mary forever…not recorded a new album in like 15 years… and hardly worked… I also didn’t think much of them the couple of times I saw them live..very short sets that didn’t come close to living up to the studio version of the band

But man that second album is honest to goodness perfection… it doesn’t get any better…it’s a top 100 LP for me… and Rachel’s voice always struck me as one of the great secrets in rock.. combination of bad girl and vulnerability (definitely reminds me of Ronnie Spector a bit) … the Cobras just never made the jump from bar band to next level…I am not entirely sure why? Did they have major production help on those first records and lose it? Did they lose a key member I didn’t realize about? Laziness? Bad management? It seemed like they gave up on being a band.. when one of their biggest boosters Jack White put out a reissue of Life, Love and Leaving I don’t remember them doing anything behind what could have been a big push

Rachel Nagy deserved to be huge. Anyone that can sing those classic songs that well deserved it…we are talking Redding , Toussaint etc … for gods sake songs identified with people like Irma Thomas! And NO it’s not that easy to know which songs to cover, how to do it and actually do it… we are not talking BTO covers here…very obscure diamonds in the rough soul…

Had to look this up to see who  produced the early DC records thinking it might have been Jim Diamond of Ghetto Recording fame.. turns out it was another go to Detroit producer Al Sutton who worked with some of the areas “bigger” names like Big Chief and Kid Rock.  Of late he has been working with Greta Van Fleet..

Rachel and Mary certainly have worked with lots of people… in Some recent live clips I saw Eddie Baranek of the Sights, etc, with them, but he is not in set from France as it says in the description…

In the comments it says the guitarist is Steve, whom I’m assuming is Steve Shaw the original DC guitar player…

It doesn’t get any better than this album.

This is great!

Detroit lost an absolute gem today in Rachel Nagy - Lead Singer of the Detroit Cobras.  I once heard her voice described, "as warm as that bottle of bourbon you left under your car seat". One of Detroit's best party bands. Samples follow in the thread
