Ian Holm
Eighteenth Street Lounge
Joel Schumacher, Director of Lost Boys  (and Batman movies with Kilmer and Clooney) Dies at 80

This was an interesting tidbit…
The openly gay Schumacher was accused of introducing homoerotic elements to the relationship between Batman and Robin; in 2006 Clooney told Barbara Walters that he had played Batman as gay.

Wow I thought they were going to try to pull through

Farid I think owns a bunch of other stuff

The 18th Street lounge was a nice place to know was around - a possibility-but I hadn’t gone in over a decade

On weekends that part of town turned into a shitshow

I’ve been as recently as six months ago. I’ll miss it although it’s heyday obviously was long ago.

Article made it sound like landlord was willing to do nothing on rent abatement during a time they legally could not open. Dumb. Who else is going to move in in the interim?

wow…

Dupont Nightlife Institution Eighteenth Street Lounge Is Permanently Closed After 25 Years
https://dc.eater.com/2020/6/22/21298957/eighteenth-street-lounge-closing-dupont-circle-25-years-covid-19

obituary by hilton:

"Yesterday, many of us lost a second home. Instead of mourning the closure of Eighteenth Street Lounge, I want celebrate what inspired the creation of The Lounge - optimism, creativity, courage, love and friendship.

It took all of these things for Farid, Yama, Aman and me to make ESL a reality. And it took a tremendous amount of sweat and determination. The Lounge is now history, but the spirit inspired ESL is still with in us.

I’ll forever cherish my memories of The Lounge. I met my wife Marcia there. I met Rob Garza there. We recorded our first Thievery Corporation LP in the liquor room at ESL. We made great friendships there, and it was a magical place that meant so much to so many.

My heart goes out to all of the people who will miss climbing those 19 stairs to feel at home. We’re blessed that we got to experience it. But all things pass.

Eighteenth Street Lounge is now a mystical part of the Infinite Everywhere.

Johnny Mandel

he did write that memorable M.A.S.H. theme song "Suicide Is Painless"

The back story on that is fairly interesting
The song was written specifically for Ken Prymus, the actor playing Private Seidman, who sang it during the faux-suicide of Walter "Painless Pole" Waldowski (John Schuck) in the film's "Last Supper" scene. Director Robert Altman had two stipulations about the song for Mandel: it had to be called "Suicide Is Painless" and it had to be the "stupidest song ever written". Altman attempted to write the lyrics himself, but upon finding it too difficult for his 45-year-old brain to write "stupid enough,"he gave the task to his 14-year-old-son Michael, who wrote the lyrics in five minutes.

in the 1980s, Robert Altman said that while he only made $70,000 for having directed the movie, his son had earned more than $1 million for having co-written the song.
