any thoughts on when Thao will start at the Cat? Would I be able to catch part of her set after The Hold Steady (looks like they start at 9.30)
Hold Steady were great….much better than last time at the club

caught about 30 minutes of Thao - very different vibe but fun
I caught the last 5 songs of Thao (25 minutes). LOVED the longer version of "Fear and Convenience" as well as "Feet Asleep".

Agreed about Hold Steady. "Slapped Actress" was my fave tonite.

Did anyone see Oneida tonight? If so, did you leave more confused than you've ever been while leaving a show? I sure did.

Explain!
From the way they were playing and interacting with each other between songs, it felt like they were trying to dick around with/frustrate the crowd for the entirety of their set. Last I checked, yes they do a lot of improvisational stuff but they never came off to me as a jamband. There's a fine line between the two. This shit they played last night sounded like something you'd hear at the state theatre. There was even one moment between songs where one of them said "I was trying to explain what we sounded like to this guy earlier tonight. I made a big mistake by not telling him that we sound like a jamband…like Widespread Panic or something." It just felt like a running joke between the band the whole time they were up there. Yeah it was funny but at the same time, it was frustrating and confusing as hell. I thought maybe we'd hear a chunk of Preteen Weaponry (their new, mostly improvised but interesting album) and some older stuff but this was all unreleased material (none of it was anything I'd heard, anyway) that sounded like it was purposefully played badly. It ended with this drums/keyboards duel that went absolutely nowhere for 15-20 minutes.
Oof…I skipped last night because I sort of expected a full set of just Preteen Weaponry material. Not that the new album is bad (because it's not)…I just couldn't imagine them playing any other material except maybe a short encore of older stuff. Sounds to me like I made a wise decision. At least the last Warehouse show (night of the ill-fated Sleater-Kinney show) killed it. Oh well.

On second thought, it wasn't all unreleased material; I think there may have been stuff from Secret Wars and Happy New Year played but 90% of it was definitely stuff I've never heard which was steeped in jambandiness.

I just read a review from a show that they played last week which featured Preteen Weaponry in its entirety.

Now I'm even more bitter; that would've been awesome to have heard last night.
I shall be doing my best to see Rasputina tonight at the Ottobar, and then again tomorrow night at the Black Cat. We'll see, as Tuesday is my VERY first day of college and tomorrow is my get-everything-done-before-first-day-of-school day (who's buying me a drink?). God grant me energy, I seem so ill-fated when it comes to Rasputina.
last night: people in planes/the skybombers

thurs night: radio 4/robbers on high street
fri: south street seaport??
Oneida
Endless Boogie
+ Very Special Guest

Kid Millions, Bobby Matador, and Baby Hanoi Jane bring it to the Seaport - a disjointed, minimalist, maximalist, psychedelic tidal wave of sound. Openers Endless Boogie play smoldering jams. Special guests tba.
Please post an Oneida review. I want to know if it's as weird as the show I saw.

If I make it to the show and stay for them - Ill gladly post a review. Read your review, so am curious about what I'll see. Im not familiar with their music at all and have no expectations - but its free and cant go wrong there!
Lots of good live music this weekend. To me. probably the best selection of live shows of any weekend this year. I have albums that I enjoy by all of these people:

Friday:

Dr. Dog at Iota
Bill Kirchen at Jammin Java
The Gourds at State Theater

Saturday:
Liam Finn/the Veils at RNR Hotel
The Walkmen at 9:30 Club
The Bottle Rockets at Iota

Sunday:
Joan as Policewoman at Iota
i'll be at Dr. Dog… Walkmen, Veils, Tricky…Joan… :p
New week.

Lightning Bolt NYC saturday!!!!!

And it's in the afternoon so I'll be back before sunrise on sunday!
i doubt I'll get better value all year than the $14 I spent last night on Liam Finn and The Veils - impressive stuff
I got robbed $14. The Veils were supposed to play for an hour, but played 30 minutes instead.

Liam Finn definitely needs a full band. But ya know, some musicians want to show us that they can play more than one instrument. So here's Liam stretching his 3 minute song into 6 minutes by playing the guitar parts first, then the drum parts…it is so pretentious. I left after 4 songs. Oh, I couldn't stand the female singer either. She didn't really help…

What does Charlie think about the show? :)
