Anyone else go to Billy Bragg?
Great show. He defenitely skewed his usual banter/music mix heavily to the music side. Other than his paranoid delusions about how the CIA was attempting to instigate a terrorist attack before the election, he was surprisingly sedate in his rhetoric.

Actually, I think he'd be lolololing it up. I'm dead certain that he buys into every little thing the Bush administration says.

Agreed!
With that said, sadly, I cannot make it. Having major car problems. :(

Caught the Hotel Cafe Tour at the 9:30 Club. I've never been to one of these shows before. I take it they've been doing this for a while, but this was the first year all the featured artists were women. It was like a mini Lilith Fair! All of the artists intermingled, playing a couple songs at a time initially, and then longer 3-4 song sets the second time on stage.
Samantha Crain opened the show. She's the youngest and a little raw. I thought she really found her voice playing solo, and she impressed me with a jawdroppingly good cover of Radiohead's "Creep".
I really adored Jenny Owen Youngs. I just loved her heartfelt songs, and she had the wittiest banter I've come across in quite some time. I ended up buying her CD after the show.
Meiko was also very good. Strong, very personal songwriting.
Most of the audience was there to see Rachael Yamagata. She blew the roof off the club with her first set, but she sadly kind of fell apart in the penultimate set when she tried to fulfill the many shouted requests by performing "Letter Read" clearly without much rehearsal.
Thao Nguyen quite simply stole the show, giving one of the strongest performances of any artist I've seen so far this year. Her catchy, fast tempo, slightly off-kilter songs are a joy. I can't wait until she performs again in our area.

I got the philly ticket before dc was announced.
I could've seen Jens in VA and Byrne in DC that weekend if I was a little more patient. Ahh well.
I don't know if it'd be cheaper seeing as Warner tickets are slightly more expensive than tower ones. Transportation will probably cover that difference, though.
Guess ixkpd-bk will introduce us at H&LA tonight.

saw the B-52's and H&LA last night in NYC - a great show. i preferred H&LA's set at the 930 club, but not by much - still got a solid performance last night. B-52's were pretty awesome.
this week: would like to do deerhunter/TNV, pelican and/or mountain goats, but work has a 99% chance of making all of those shows impossible for me. might try to catch gutter twins on friday. saturday is definitely adam west @ DC9 - their last show ever, band is breaking up after this gig. should be a hoot… and very loud.

Wow, that is startling that Adam West is breaking up… they've been around longer than the new 930 Club, longer than the new Black Cat, longer than the Velvet Lounge, almost as long as I've lived in DC….
