What Are You Listening To?

the broken west pretty much sounds like any other solid power-pop record, but it's probably my favorite album of the year so far … it's a lot like how i felt about brendan benson's last disc

highly recommended to fans of camera obscura / belle & sebastianSaw them open for Band of Horses and was was pleasantly surprised but not overwhelmed. I think I'll check out the album though.
I'm listening to the Tom Waits collection as well. It's awesome so far.

Also listening to the new CYHSY, Lily Allen, and Islands (finally). Enjoying all of them.
you like the CYHSY disc?

i was really disappointed … seems like a few good songs ("underwater" is the big standout for me) around a whole lot of filler … and what kind of message were they trying to send with the horribly compressed and distorted opening track? as close to unlistenable as anything i've heard lately
Yesssssssss to whoever mentioned "Blondie" by Ada. There were 10, maybe 12 people here at Nation when she came through with the Areal vs. DJ tour. That album is just SOOOOOOO good, and the B-Sides are even better.

Have you heard the B-Side stuff (Lovelace, Call That Tune, etc.)? It's TOO good!

Meanwhile, I've been listening to Lucinda Williams' new one, the Siouxsie and the Banshees "Downside Up" collection, and literally everything from Escort.

I was listening to this in the car on the way home from work tonight. It's odd how I always seem to think it's good but only so-so until I put the thing on. Then I'm always taken with how much I like it. It holds up well all the way through and contains a lot of fairly decent song writing. Each of the songs are consistant yet versatile as you go through the disc. Everything is performed rather well too. It won't be my album of the year but it will be one that will always be a nice treat to return to. I kind of think you will like them.
I think the new CYHSY is alright. I kinda like the first distorted track. I mainly bought it to hear what they did with "Satan Said Dance". Saw them perform it live at the 8x10 and thought it was their best song.

I figure either the album will grow on me, or I will start to hate it.

Girl, You Have Got To Be Loving Your Man
new Ted Leo - meh
really? pity….although the demos I downloaded last year were fairly insipid
i think i may have just had my fill of old teddy boy at this point. wish him nothing but the best, but now it's all political all the time, i don't find the songs as catchy, there are so damn many of them, etc. i can't help but compare everything to "tyranny of distance," and that's tough to top.
