What Are You Listening To?

VH-VH

Was up late reading the chapter about the recording of this album in Van Halen Rising. Probably the best description of that miracle we will ever get. Templemann (producer), Lannde (engineer), the band members etc all chime in. One of the best debut albums in history without a doubt. It’s funny reading in the book how it took Roth years to work - more like worm- his way into the band. He couldn’t sing and Eddie and Alex loathed him. But he persisted, got in and proved everyone wrong. Templemann says that when he first saw and signed VH all he cared about was Eddie and he thought Roth sucked and thought of replacing him with Hagar!! This was back in 1977. But Roth proved him wrong and Ted eventually realized all that Roth brought to the band. Over and over and year after year Roth just proved everyone wrong. That’s some real self belief!

Hard to believe that Ted Templeman is one of the guys in this band (I think he's the guy on the far left holding the light pole).

It's a Cherry Red compilation and I'm not sure i would categorize some of these strictly power pop.  i.e Elvis Costello, Boomtown Rats, The Jam, etc

It's one of those collection with a mixture and familiar and less known bands.  Lots of names I didn't recognize at first glance i.e. The Pleasures, No Sweat, Salford Jets, Zoots Alors, Titch Turner's Escalator.

That's very typical for Cherry Red and I love them for it. They take wide views of genre so that they don't strictly define it and miss out on the grey stuff. Their comps tell stories as well as histories.

And they dig incredibly deep; lots of stuff sourced from vinyl. On the (highly recommended) "British Mod Sounds of the 1960s" 4CD set, there's a track so obscure that they didn't have the artist name, so they invented one for them! (Wish I could remember which track). The comp begins with The High Numbers "I'm The Face", of course. Track 4 is Tom Jones "Chills And Fever", one of his earliest singles and randy af.

is the Mod collection on Edsel/Demon?  and since it's compiled by Eddie Piller the man guy behind Acid Jazz this is going to be good…  now finding a copy should be fun.
My last pickup was The Northern Soul Scene which collects late 60s British Soul released on Decca that later were played in the clubs.

I'm sure I've had heard some of these in other compilations, but will never tire of hearing The Flirtations - Nothing But A Heartbreak

Yes, Edsel (I often mix up Edsel and Cherry Red). That fake name track was originally on an Acid Jazz comp with the same fake name.

was curious to hear TNSS album…spotify only has 6 of th 25 songs streaming
https://open.spotify.com/album/67UoZsODIDU1g4gN1uJmSk#_=_

youtube people have made playlists of the whole thing, so will dig there

also that Flirtations song is a banger and had heard before, but nice to put a name to a song

which lead youtube to this tdc of Hermanos Gutiérrez…very good stuff and they will be at the Lincoln on 9/25

Definitely dodgy… there must be a whole series of those Decca compilations and who ever runs that bandcamp page buys one on CD uploads it and then flogs the CD.  Surprised UME is allowing that to be bought as a digital download that way
Cowboy Junkies- The Caution Horses

Sleep Token - Even In Arcadia

on my second listen.  will be very high up, if not at the top, of my album of the year list (not that i usually make one…).  hasn't grabbed me like their previous album has, but that took a while so TBD with this new one.

objectively, it's more of the same - not gonna convert anyone, but amazing if their music works for you.  the faithful are collectively losing their shit over these 10 tracks.  it's been out for about 12 hours and already climbing the charts (currently #5 on apple music albums chart, expect it to be #1 or #2 next week on spotify).
new mclusky and a live Butthole Surfers album?  It must be my birthday (it's not)

Dizzy still - it’s late 1956-blows with a lot of the bebop fire here with some up and comers….

There sure are a lot of boring Dizzy albums but this is in the top 5.

80s free jazz.

Been finding some stuff at the thrifts last few weeks.

A great and odd hodge podge release. The last Soda Stereo album. First seven tracks from MTV unplugged including a revamped version of En La ciudad de la furia with Andrea Echeverry from Aterciopelados which turns the song into Pink Floyd, a rare b side (Un misil en mi placard), a version of Te Para Tres with a Spinetta coda cribbed from an Artaud song, and five leftover studio tracks from the sessions for their 1995, and final, album tacked on at end. Planeador, in particular, is a classic.

Subsequently this MTV unplugged album would be rereleased with all the MTV tracks and without the Sueno Stereo outtakes. Both versions are absolutely essential.

Am not exaggerating. Those who know KNOW

I really can't put my finger on it, but I love Artaud and have listened to it many dozens of times since it was mentioned here
I've said it before, but gives me jeff buckly vibes (predating jeff even being born)
Boy Deluxe.

I like, what I am hearing, so far.
Plus . . . .

So excited, for the return of Fiona Apple.

New song, is fire.
This new Lemonheads with J Mascis is an absolute delight.

Walkie is not wrong.
My much better half is involved in the Courtwatch PG group that inspired Fiona’s new song
