What Are You Listening To?

next on the new release heavy rotation is

The Suffers - It Starts with Love

Definitely their best album to date as the second was good but always left me a little cold and the first was a solid introduction.  This one easily moves from being joyous to serious and it's letting some of it's other musical influences come out…
since i need to trot out at least one "obscure" release, i present

The Handcuffs - Burn The Rails

https://thehandcuffs.bandcamp.com/

Featuring Brad Elvis of Elvis Brother fame and The Romantics of late on drums and singer\saxophonist Chloe F. Orwell, this one has lots of rock swagger and attitude with hits of glam, etc… also features on a couple tracks  guest keyboardist Morgan Fisher (Mott The Hoople) demonstrates his synthesizer and piano prowess

and yes in amongst all those guitars, drums and keyboards, there is some rockin' sax

definitely a keeper for moi
Two tracks into this and I'm was spending my money on it

Back To Business
by Chris Bangs & Mick Talbot

https://acidjazz.bandcamp.com/album/back-to-business

Not that he ever really went a way, but nice return by Mick Talbot (Style Council, etc) some on fire keyboard playing on this…

i like this quote about it

Indeed if the LP was presented as some lost 60s Blue Note/Chess album from someone like, say, Brother Jack McDuff, Jimmy Smith or Ramsey Lewis you wouldn’t  blink an eye lid!

nods also to Earl Van Dyke
While maybe a bit early in the day for it, I was rocking out to the new Nova Twins album "Supernova".  These young ladies rock HARD, the lazy RIYL would be RATM, but i'm sure there are better comparisons, but sure bring the heavy and rage to this release

and I miss the CMJ New Music Reviews Recommended If You Like (RIYL) inclusions in their reviews, almost always spot on and I wish you would see this more often… but i guess algorithms do that now a day instead  ::)  and of course so few music reviewers now…

I thought all 80s Miles kind of sucked but when I saw the musicians on this I had to get it…..really kind of skruonk jam jazz but pretty good… Miles is very energetic here

My one RSD purchase. Everything is cheaper online than at the record stores
diving in deep into The Beautiful South catalog…

Couldn't resist either, what with liner notes by the Iron Man himself….

TIL about greg Iron Man tate,  Music journalist extrodiare

What It Is: Montreal 7/7/83 features liner notes penned by the incomparable music journalist Greg Tate in one of his final writing pieces
the man known as Ironman…  33 years at WPFW radio before the Villiage Voice

70s Jamaican dub represents one of the pinnacles of recorded music….that it was accomplished by a few hundred mostly impoverished and stoned rastas in the middle of incredible levels of violence blows my mind…

King Tubby is as good as it gets in the genre and this and his work with Yabby You may be my favorites. He was gunned down in the late 80s widely unknown. Glen Brown moved to upstate New York and got into home building.
Kate Bush - Aerial

had completely forgotten about the track "Mrs. Bartolozzi that someone smarter than I once said

It revives Bush's obsessive eroticism through an ordinary woman's ecstatic experience of cleaning after a rainstorm, and placing the clothing of her beloved and her own into the washing machine and observing in rapt sexual attention.

The late 60s early 70s soul jazz run of records is something I collect and enjoy….better than the late 60s early 70s run on Blue Note which began to noticeably slide when Alfred Lion sold the label.

This session from March 1970 has somewhat of a dream lineup with Boogaloo on guitar, Rusty Bryant on sax, Charles Earland on organ and Pretty Purdie on drums

Public Enemy was by far the biggest rap act 1987-1991. They were absolutely huge. It was no contest. They may have been the biggest act period. Just dominated

Then they just like fell off the planet or something. Like so bad…

Was it because a bunch of stuff kept coming out about how they and their production team and/or Professor Griff or Terminator X were anti-semitic? Sure seems like they just disappeared or were disappeared.  Maybe the follow up to Fear of a black planet sucked but man suddenly they just disappeared! Plenty of bands peak and have weak follow ups and still say around! These guys just dropped off the planet in 1992. It was just bizarre.

When I was in grad school Chuck D did some event I attended..just talking…then I finally saw them at Virgin Freefest…I thought they killed it but the act did wear a bit thin you know with Flavor running around with his clock yelling YO YO Chuck!!!

It’s sad that they became a complete joke. It doesn’t even make sense. They had three great albums! So innovative and influential

O’ Canada O’ Canada
Look what you’ve done
You’ve ruined my appreciation for the rest of the world

A seminal album in my life. It defined 1998 for me. I introduced so many friends to this…
Breakmaster Cylinder on the final episode of Reply All

Belle and Sebastian was by far the biggest Scottish Indie pop act 1998-2003. They were absolutely huge (in the UK). It was no contest. They may have been the biggest act to ever come out of Scotland. Just dominated

Then they just like fell off the planet or something. Like so bad…

Was it because a bunch of stuff kept coming out about how they changed labels and sold out?  Was it the departure of the other Stuart? Sure seems like they just disappeared or were disappeared.  Maybe the follow up to Fold Your Hands Child, You Walk Like a Peasant sucked but man suddenly they just disappeared! Plenty of bands peak and have weak follow ups and still say around! These guys just dropped off the planet in 2003. It was just bizarre.

When I was in law school Stuart M did some event I attended…just talking…then I finally saw them at the 9:30…I thought they killed it but the act did wear a bit thin you know with Sarah just standing there, playing a million instruments and Stuart toyed with the crowds emotions and even joined them at one point!!

It’s sad that they became a complete joke. It doesn’t even make sense. They had three great albums! So innovative and influential
I see what you did there and I like it!

Oh, Bravo. POTW.

I’m guessing you got the same 1:15am EST text from The Director this morning as well.
I just feel they started and peaked earlier

It’s more like 1996-2000
