yeah I thought that is who you meant.. cool.. I wanted to know what his band's name was..thanks.
At da gym, listening to Metallica's new one.

Fuck, yeah.

I listened to this one about an hour ago….I'm listening to jazz tonight.. night in..

Time Out is  a great album.. I think Brubeck gets a bad rap.. and Desmond who is a wonderful alto player seems to just get ignored.. he of course wrote Take Five which became Brubeck's signature tune….I once went to a music appreciation class and the instructor started out by playing this song…

The original LP copies do not say "Featuring Take Five"….they added that in later when it became huge…

Its a great record though…I was heartened to see that on Rate Your Music its about the top 200th rated album.. not bad..

cool artwork I think by Fujita who did some other cool ones for Columbia including Mingus ah um

I saw Brubeck once.. about ten years ago at the Lincoln.. very cool.. of course he did perform Take Five…

I'm not a huge Oscar Peterson fan but this recording has some sentimental value..for some reason its one I don't tend to see around..Maybe it didn't sell much?

Its amazing how many records the guy cut.. like Ella he was managed by Norman Granz who put out hundreds of sessions by him….I think Granz held him in higher stead than most critics and listeners…I don't think his music has aged particularly well.. I don't know much about music but his piano playing just seems very straightforward.. its sorta the anti-Monk… Personally it doesn't do very much for me.. I can't think of dozens of jazz piano players I appreciate more but its Oscar that cut hundreds of records…. Norman just loved him

On this record though its slightly cool to hear him play the piano to the tune of Sinatra's singing on those landmark Capitol recordings…

Now on this set is a jazz piano player I can get into and do: Bobby TImmons.. very funky.. one of the earliest of soul jazz players before there even was such a thing..wrote some great songs which Art Blakey made famous like Moanin'…

Of course unlike the by the numbers Oscar Peterson he did not get recorded much as a leader.. got in trouble and died young…sigh..

I think but can't prove that Timmons influenced guys like Bobby Byrd… the whole house music scene which sort of came out of Byrd's piano on that one  Brown song.. I think it goes back to Timmons..but its just speculation..

I love Julian Adderley…very soulful jazz player not at all "out there" or free jazzy which is something I don't get much into…Adderley is the perfect foil for Coltrane on Davis' Kind of Blue.. they are both necessary even if Coltrane's solos are the ones studied by musicians… Adderley has a warmth to his playing that I really enjoy….

If Oscar is very conventional.. to my ears its missing the improvisational aspect of jazz…. Monk is his opposite…I don't see many Monk, or Mingus for that matter, records around…

Butch Warren also plays bass on this….
iggy pop - live at the royal albert hall

ouch, but apt commentary

This is Aretha's first album for Columbia Records.. she recorded a lot of records for Columbia but did not attain success til she switched to Atlantic….her records tended to be jazzier than they would be for Atlantic but she already sounds like ARETHA… Its amazing how much these early records get panned or ignored….Anyways, she was barely 18 when this one was recorded!… John Hammond signed her.. the next year he signed Bob Dylan…

Columbia's six eye label is a thing of beauty…..I'm glad I have a decent copy of this one. .

Iggy is the man! I hope he comes to DC again.. it has been too long! I regret missing the Pimlico show…

From what I hear though his body is really hurting…the Philly show earlier this year was unbelievable but I do think he's got some issues either with the hips or knees or something…..

in retrospect I'm really shocked I did not go to Pimlico in 08.. yeah I hate festivals but Dylan, Chuck Berry, Underworld and Iggy? Even Wilco
