The JAMC is a slightly better JAMC album than Songs from lost world is a Cure album.
It’s just that nobody wanted a new JAMC album.
What Are You Listening To?
Nick Cave has the biggest winning streak going…closing in on FIFTY years now. Just insane. Makes me think he sold his soul to the devil or something….
Tom Petty did pretty good too…about 40 years…never lost his ability to write a winsome melody….they are almost contemporaries…how odd…
I think what also makes Nick distinctive is that his fanbase continues to grow gradually never becoming mass popular and people don’t necessarily know all the stuff that he did before. They just know the stuff from where they came in. And because of his appearance with the dyed surely fake jet black hair he just looks so much younger than he is…. I don’t think most people realize he is nearly 70! Again, sold his soul to the devil.
I was listening to Wild God again this morning

I agree, TP is close to one of the few artists after a few decades can still put out great work
although Petty goes from 76- to the late 90s putting out good stuff
but can't say anything he did the last 20 years was that great
Cave has him beat on that
I think even absolute geniuses like Bowie or Prince, both had a decade or so of amazing work, but the second half of their careers produced very free memorable pieces

His output really tanked after he died in 2017.

My favorite Tom Petty for the past few years has been his 2006 album Highway Companion. I think his song Down South is one of the best things he ever did. Put on the album when out for a 45 minute drive. Really in his last 15 years there are only five albums. One solo (Highway companion), two with Mudcrutch and two with the Heartbreakers (Mojo, Hypnotic Eye). Am still needing to listen some more to these last two…Mojo didn’t grab me.
Totally agree that most great artists only have about a good 10-15 year window at the top at their peak. There are very very few exceptions to this rule. They can still pull off great things after their peak though….but it’s rare

Peter Holsapple - The Face Of 68
Produced by Don Dixon, Peter goes power trio with Rob Ladd (The Connells) on drums and a name I haven’t seen in a long time Robert Sledge (Ben Folds Five) on bass.
Lots of great songs many reminiscent of the dBs

Bob Marley 65-80
i feel bob's entry needs an asterisk: marley released his first album in '65 and his last album in '80 (died in '81)… so while this does fit the "10-15 year peak" narrative, it's not like he had a middling/"resting on past laurels" period ;D

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds at Anthem on floor towards back center maybe 15 rows in front of the sound people. If it gets any better I haven’t experienced it.
