What Are You Listening To?

I bungled the quote

This book also explains the reason for the cheesy synths

Leonard’s most obscure album?

Hey Hutch….. so good to see a familiar face!
David Bowie - Stage 2017 Edition. Vastly superior to the OG, in that the original setlist order is restored and now it makes sense. I could just never get with Alabama Song, no matter who was singing it. For no reason other than I just think that it's an annoying song.

+1…hate that song

although had no idea of the history
The "Alabama Song"—also known as "Moon of Alabama", "Moon over Alabama", and "Whisky Bar"—is an English version of a song written by Bertolt Brecht and translated from German by his close collaborator Elisabeth Hauptmann in 1925 and set to music by Kurt Weill for the 1927 play Little Mahagonny. It was reused for the 1930 opera Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny and has been notably covered by The Doors and David Bowie.

This is the Mudhoney record with the sample from The Wild Angels which Primal Scream used a few years later

Mudhoney LP came out in 88 and the Scream’s Loaded in 1990

It was DJ Andrew Weatherall who I believe just passed away that used the sample for Primal Scream…I doubt he knew who Mudhoney was in 1990
Mahler 6, 5, 4.
Gotta admit, Chicago slays Pittsburgh in the brass department.
No, not the band.
new Bright Eyes song

Baxter Dury - The Night Chancers

The apple didn’t fall from the tree on this one, Baxter not only sounds a bit like his dad, but he has similar musical sensibilities
Listened to Guided by Voices for the first time this morning. Great stuff.

Normally I feel good about discovering new acts but I’m so far behind the 8 ball here it’s embarrassing.

better late than never
bob only has about 100 albums out…perfect quarantine binge!
Mahler Symphonies:

#3 New York
#2 San Francisco
#1 Pittsburgh

The complete GBV catalog would be a daunting proposition. You have my full support.
Anything I should focus on or avoid?

Last year it was Nick Cave and while I enjoy binge listening, I have to kick myself for missing out for so long.
Gimme a sec

Fun fact…you know who turned Hutch on to GBV…
While outside having a smoke before a bob mould solo show in G-town(like 20 years ago) Hutch runs into Bob and asks him 'What are you listening to" and his answer was like "I can't wait to get home to hear the new GBV album"

That's our boy, Hutch!
It would have been about 26 years ago

I do remember trying to hip Mould to the Mountain Goats and Bob saying My Bloody Valentines Loveless was 20 years ahead of its time…then when Sugar’s FUEL came out I noticed Favorite Thing was a blatant ripoff of a MBV song or maybe it was already out

It was cool chatting with Mould for quite a bit before a few others noticed him

I do not remember him hipping me to GBV but probably true

Stone the Crow what have you heard from GBV so far?

Everyone will tell you start with Bee Thousand/Alien Lanes/Under the Bushes
Then you work back but only as far as Propeller and Vampire on Titus plus the Fast Japanese Cycle ep

Then the Robert Pollard first solo LP Not in my air force

Then the GBV fan club cd/LP Tonics and Twisted Chasers

Then the Bob Pollard/Doug Gillard LP Speak kindly of your fire department which even Bob now says should have been a GBV LP

If you are liking it all hard then you are ready for the first Suitcase

That’s how I would start…
^
Not hardly daunting at all, when you lay it out like that.
Maybe throw in a live semi official bootleg to get a feel for the live experience ..man where they sloppy at first but that was part of charm

Live boot I would get is Crying your knife away

If you find yourself liking the Tobin sprout sung songs and they were part of what reeled me in you would get Sprouts first matador LP…carnival boy

Think of pollard as Lennon and McCartney and Sprout as George Harrison

This is until Bob splits up band in 1997 and comes back with mag earwig which I avoid
