What Are You Listening To?

All good stuff but have you heard any of the material they did before their debut record? It's worth hunting for, believe me.

a while ago we were griping that daft punk had no plans to release a DVD of the tour. i've now come around to the opinion that this was a wise decision - the audio reminded me of how great those shows were, and how impossible it would be to bottle up into a video recording. the two-disk deluxe edition contains a video of "better faster harder stronger", will need to see what that looks like when the disks arrive.

The Ballad of Brian Walalcecl

[has anyone talked about how james murphy / lcd soundsystem has a total mark e. smith vibe going on, especially in "losing my edge"?]

Hes not appreciated.
Hes not appreciated.
Hes not appreciated.

Drink the long draught, dan,
For the hip priest.

I said drink the long draught, dan,
For the hip priest!

Hes not appreciated
Hes not appreciated

White collar hits motorway services
Its the hip priest
From the eyes he can see, they know
Its the hip priest

Hes not appreciated.

Its purple psychology.
Not just an old ladys.

Thats hip hip hip hip hit hit hit hip priest

Thats hip hip hip hip hit hit hit hip priest

And hes gonna make an appearance.
Hes gonna make an appearance.

Was shown in a freakshow early on.
And drunk from small brown bottles since I was so long.

Cause Im a hip priest
Cause Im a hip priest
People only need me when theyre down and gone to seed.
Cause Im a hip priest.
Cause Im a hip priest.

Its appreciation half won.
And they hate their allegiance to hip preacher one.
Hip priest

I got my last clean dirty shirt outta the wardrobe
I got my last clean dirty shirt outta the wardrobe
And all the good people know

Thats hip hip hip hip hit hit hit hip priest

All the young groups know
All the young groups know
They cant ever take advantage because Im a hip priest.
I was as clean as a packet of chocolate chips.

Thats hip hip hip hip hit hit hit hip priest

And if the good people knew they would say
Hes not appreciated
Hes not appreciated
I can definitely hear that similarity.

Mark E. Smith doesn't like him all that much according to recent (funny) interviews, though.

Just the live ones (they're much better live - 200 miles comes to mind), but the Trinity Sessions was the peak in my eyes.

I do listen to Black Eyed Man on occasion (my second favorite) and Lay it down, but haven't purchased a CJ album in quite some time.

Agreed. Complete with a beautiful version of Sweet Jane.
Merzbow/Bastard Noise split.

I flipping LOVE Alcest. That's one CD that I have to force myself not too listen to too often so as not let myself get tired of them too fast because I keep wanting to hear it yet again.

Which is your favorite song? Mine is "Tir Nan Og". Love them all though.

Ditto.

I just heard the album for the first time a few hours ago and that track definitely stood out for me.

What are some other discs I should check out?

I love that album too. There are a couple others that I sort of associate with the Alcest vibe, though the sound isn't really the same.

Wolves in the Throne Room and Jesu are a little more on the metal side, but have the big guitar wave sound. Place to Bury Strangers is heavy on the Jesus & Mary Chain vibe, lots of feedback. Ceremony is the same, a little more poppy.

Others that don't really sound like Alcest, but seem come from similar places are Om, Working for a Nuclear Free City, Panda Bear, and Six Organs of Admittance.
