What Are You Listening To?

I find Joan Jett very overrated

Suzi Quatro did it years earlier and far better..unfortunately she is completely overlooked

When Suzi put this out in October 1973 Joan Jett has just turned 15…the Runways years away and her solo career still about seven years away

And it’s much much better than anything Jett ever did…

Man it’s like a morgue

Honestly I haven't even gotten through it.
Santana III

This is the album where Jorge ghosted for Carlos
Jan Garbarek / Agnes Buen Garnas - Rosensfole
Medieval Songs From Norway on ECM Records.
It is just what it says. On repeat this afternoon.

Still missed 40 years

Yeah, not sure I agree, but opinions are like assholes, everyone's got one
It's kinda like saying that Bowie's early 70s stuff isn't worth listening to as he basically ripped off Marc Bolan

but will give her more consideration as my only real interaction with this individual is her  "recurring role as bass player Leather Tuscadero on Happy Days"
^ Yeah, but Bolan never really evolved, he just kept going back to that well with diminishing returns. Unless you like the folky stuff (I don't), Electric Warrior is really sufficient. And a few of the singles before and after.
i can’t think of one great Joan Jett album I pull out

Let’s face it she was a manufactured rock star…and is best known for a faithful cover of an obscure song called I love rock and roll…the original version is so obscure most people think she wrote the song…her other hits follow the same pattern : crimson and clover etc

The Runaways records are mediocre.. basically Kim Fowley selling teenage sex

And the comparison with Bowie/T Rex? That happened within a year or so…Suzi Quatro was in 1973!! Way before Jett not to mention Jett never got close to what Suzi Quatro did whereas Bowie gave us Ziggy

I don’t get the Joan Jett thing..even Chrissie Hynde rocks harder and better

Well, I won't argue she has one great album and 100% most of her best songs are covers

and also not going deny that there was some work to make her a star,
but my understanding is no one would sign Jett before I Love RnR
They had to come up with their own label Blackheart Records to get their stuff released
so can't really say that some big studio guy had their back in the early 80s…at least as far as I can tell
after ILrnr became huge, I'm sure that changed

I think these are all rocking tunes
Crimson and clover
Do you want touch me
Bad Reputation
I hate myself for loving you

I don't love everything about the runaways, but Cherry Bomb (co-writting credit to jett) is a great song

I do agree Chrissie has much more cred and swagger
The key with Blackheart records is they quickly got major label distribution (Epic? No maybe CBS) so how indie is it when you get stocked in every record store in America? This wasn’t Dischord..
Was Joan Jett ever on Happy Days? I think not.
How indie is this? Read his bio

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kenny_Laguna

I really think Jett is a bit of an act

Notice Laguna’s connection to bubblegum pop!

The key question is how did Blackheart records get all that distribution in the early 80s?

My guess is Blackheart Records is a shell corporation and about as indie as the major that distributes it..makes for a great PR story though which Jett has been milking for 40 years

Yeah, but that was after ILRNR started becoming a hit
my understanding is they shoped it around to every lable and got turned down by every single one so they had to self release
some NY dj loved it and played the shit out of it, then Epic/CBS was like…umm we better snap this up

she and her manager, Kenny Laguna, found it virtually impossible to land a record deal; as Laguna later alleged, they received at least one rejection letter from every major in the industry. Undaunted, Laguna funded and self-released Jett's 1980 solo debut, selling it directly to concertgoers at her gigs. Eventually, her music got the attention of former Casablanca Records impresario Neil Bogart, who picked up the distribution rights to the Joan Jett record — later reissued as Bad Reputation — and brought Jett on board for her next release.

No! I love rock and roll is her second album! By that point she was part of Boardwalk Records run and owned by the guy who used to own Casablanca (KISS, Donna Summer, Village People, etc)

I mean it’s all a bit shrouded (no doubt on purpose) but come on…the guy behind KISS, Village People etc

You can’t make this shit up

So are you saying that the statement above is a fabrication?
I saw the documentary from a few years back and the story was pretty much the same
Doesn't mean it was is a fact… but that's the story I am sticking with
She was indie for a year cause nobody was interested and when her manager Laguna, mainly from the bubblegum world of yummy, yummy hooked Bogart, of KISS and Village people fame, she became part of the majors…she retained her imprint (Blackheart) for cool points

She’s a fake.

Speaking of fake  I saw Joan at the 930 maybe 15 years ago? The Botox my lord

On the plus side she did that album with The Gits or what was left of them as Evil Stig

I am not sure what you are saying you are sticking to? That she was unsigned after leaving the Runaways? Obviously true but she signed as quickly as she could when someone put a contract in front of her
