H St. NE has really changed a LOT in the past few years.  At this point there are so many people hanging out down there for food / shows / drinking that it has become difficult to find parking!  The city has put in heaps of street lights and businesses have really sprouted up like crazy.  If you want to be scared of any area venue, perhaps you should invest your concern in DC9  :o

Dc9? srsly?

I was at RNR last night and the last time I went there was just about 2 years and just in that time span it's changed a lot.

I agree with DFA. I only live about 8 blocks away from RnR and I was amazed last night at how much it's changed, in just the last few months even. Within a year, I'll bet it will be virtually unrecognizable to someone who hasn't been there in a year or two.
luckily mr. ford will still be able to pass judgement on it.  not having been there in one year, two years, ever… doesn't matter.
RNR Hotel? Been there.

Good place to see a show if it's not too crowded. Terrible place to see a show if it's too crowded.

I usually agree with this ^^^ especially 9:30 shows, but last night's sold out show was highly manageable. I was able to get from my spot mid-floor to the bar and back several times with no problems.

The ability to navigate the club when it is sold out is proportional to the age (indirectly) and size (directly) of the average person attending the show that night.  I was at a sold out show and it seemed as if the club were almost ½ empty.  Then it dawned on me…  It was a show aimed at a younger audience.  Smaller People!  Ta da!
Also, this was a lively show and so there were more people all crammed up and going apeshit at the front of the stage. At a mellower show, people would probably be more spread out all over the floor.

maybe it was a bad joke
how was this not announced?  it's today:

Gruff Rhys (of Super Furry Animals), Y Niwl
@ The Red Palace
* Fri May 20th
* 8:00pm
* $12 pre/$14 door
* All Ages
http://redpalacedc.com/
Could have sworn I posted that back when it was booked.

Either way, I'm absolutely there. Saw Gruff in NYC in January and it was great. This time he's got a backing band and a new album's worth of songs to play.

I've never been to the Red Palace. Is it one of those RnR Hotel-esque shitty places?
