Who is going . . . I am curious if anyone is forking over dough for the Police?
If someone told you one of the best times of your life was gonna cost you a couple hundred bucks, wouldn't you pay?? You CAN'T put a price on that shit. PERIOD.
I know, I know. However, was it the time of your life? I mean some are saying they wish they never went to the Police shows - are they improving any? I'm willing to pay but for two tickets at $500+ - I'm not so sure my friends would be willing to pay me back and I can get a trip to LA and much more for that…and I like it more when money comes or is available. :) I think I'm nixing the Police - just a bit over my price limit.
I'm good with that. More floor seats for me.

And for the record, The Police shows have gotten better for me each time. I thought Bonnaroo was good/solid, but far from groundbreaking. Hershey & VFest were a different story, however. THAT was some powerful shit, & I don't tend to exaggerate, which is why I'm so picky with shows. I talked to a bunch of people at VFest that weren't coming to see The Police, & thought they were amazing. Some people on this board slammed it. It is what it is. I like to call it my "salmon theory". Some swim against the stream simply just to fuckin' do it.

Just remember. 30 million people in the U.S. bought Britney Spears albums, & other than gyrating (not to be an underestimated gift by any means) she has no discernable talent to speak of. I say all that to say this. Don't put stock into the opinions of the public. They're not always right. And don't place your faith into the opinions of (mostly) hipsters. Some girl here actually said Interpol was better live than The Police. I've seen Interpol live.

Fuck no.
For the NYC'ers:

Late night Bowery Ballroom Girl Talk/Dan Deacon show after the already scheduled one.

On ticketmaster right now.

Edit: After the Webster show that is.
Hey Director:

Why not take all that money and musical focus you spend on Police and other mainstream shows and spend it on innumerable shows at small venues like Black Cat, Iota, Rock and Roll Hotel, etc? Wouldn't it be cooler to see bands when they are young and vital, before they become nostalgia acts, like the Police? Or before they water down and sell out, like Rilo Kiley? And don't knock the hipsters. I'll bet hipsters were the first people to listen to the Police, and Rilo Kiley.

Rhett
I'm pretty sure that salmon swim upstream to get laid.

I'm just saying…

Really hope you are right. However, i haven't seen it billed as Misfits songs anywhere except on this messageboard. Danzig's website only has it him with Doyle's band opening. In fact, Danzig makes it a point to say that he will be playing songs from his new solo album. But no where does it say, "Misfits Songs."

I realize Rilo is watered down compared to their past albums. (The new album's funky, so that's the main reason I dig it.) I am familiar with some of their older material, I was just never really moved to explore them until recently. And seeing as I was in kindergarten, it would be hard for me to have seen The Police then. I have "indie acts" I see/love as well. My musical taste is a little more cultured/off the wall than most, so I don't tend to tip my hand all the time. No point in talking about it if no one cares/wants to learn. You just know what you see here. Anyone that's ever met me knows how I get down.

Simply Rhett, I am a fan of good music. Period. Whether it's moved 10,000 or 1 million, I'll like it if it's good, quality music. Please also keep in mind, that I have to stay on top of a BUNCH of genres (aside of being a music freak, I DJ as well), whereas most (not all) here stick to indie rock. There's only so much I can catch (I catch a nice amount) before it hits the surface.

I think a nice percentage of people here, NOT ALL OF YOU (won't name names) hate anything that'll fill a venue outside of the size of 9:30/Black Cat. That shit is disgusting to me. On the flipside of that, as we all know not all groups that move units are talented or great. As well as some groups that don't sell for a reason cause they fuckin' suck. Some groups don't get the attention/sales they deserve, while others get far too much. Good music & great groups can come from anywhere whether they can fill The Meadowlands, Verizon, 9:30 or even DC9 or your local watering hole.

Okie dokie. Would be interested in more often hearing your take on the various indie and other nonmainstream acts of other genres you listen to and see. Reading about the Police on this board for the 8 millionth time gets a bit tedious. ;)

Precisely. I think the disdain is more for larger venues that weren't built with providing for the best acoustics in mind (verizon center) rather than the bands that grow to be big enough to play them.

New Thread. You guys are screwing up Just Announced.
I don't know, inbetween announcements, why not commentary?

P.S. Small clubs are great but you're going to hear a lot of shitty bands before you hear a good one. Ten percent rule.
Velvet Lounge:
Tuesday, November 6th
Weedeater (Southern Lord, ex-Buzz*oven)

Yes!
This just in in "indie is the new mainstream" news:

Animal Collective
10/5
Conan

Good for them. Strawberry Jam is pretty much perfect except for that annoying transition or lack there of from Chores>For Reverend Green.
Against Me!
Sage Francis
World Inferno Friendship Society
Cobra Skulls

930 Club 11/13
Ten percent rule at small clubs beats the five percent rule at Verizon Center.

Some girl here actually said Interpol was better live than The Police. I've seen Interpol live.

Fuck no.
To be fair to "some girl," I believe she had gone to see Interpol the night or two nights before at the Norva which was a wicked show, and I think she commented that in comparison to the wad of money she dropped on police tickets the Interpol show was better from a quality/cost and more enjoyable overall than the Police show.

If you interpret that as saying that Interpol is better than the Police live, that's OK because it's phuckin true.

But again we're comparing apples and oranges, I know you've never seen a Interpol headline show in a modestly sized venue, nor are you familiar with their material and I'm willing to bet she doesn't sniff Sting's jock like some Police fans do, so you both approached the shows from a different vantage point, so I think both perspectives are valid except of course for the fact that the Police at this point aren't entertaining enough to be invited to sell merch at a Interpol show :p

But I only say this with the love I have for you homie

That "some girl" would not be me…if that is what you are referring to. Because I have never seen The Police and as such would not make that comment.
It's my fault that the thread went astray, I'm sorry. I'm a little busy and jumped in to ask about the Police where I could. (Miz P, I don't think he was referring to you. ;) )
All right, I can't bring the thread back around too much because I don't have earth shattering concert news:

Fionn Regan at Iota 10/13 – is an early show - 6:30 pm…(Rhett if you and the wife are going, let's talk closer to the date of show…)

Glen Phillips - C'ville, VA @ Gravity Lounge on 10/2 and in Roanoke, VA @ 202 Market on 10/3.
(hush, it's in the state of VA!)

I wish I could go to the Kim Richey shows next weekend w/ Peter Bradley Adams as support. He returns on 11/12 at Jammin' Java ($10 7:30PM) sponsored by American Songwriter.
Unfortunately, I'll be missing that one for the same reason I'm missing Josh Ritter; we'll be on vacation.

In the same musical vein, Elvis Perkins is playing Jammin Java December 5. I think we will try to catch that one.
