Just Announced

For those of you who may have missed it in the small indie festival thread…

DAM! Festival finally announce their first batch of performers:

Travis Morrison, Longwave, Forget Cassettes, Hopewell, De Novo Dahl, Decibully, Bishop Allen, Carol Bui, Falcon and many, many more to come…

Also, we are having a pre-party on October 20th at the RnR hotel with Exit Clov and a special guest, plus the whole evening will be DJed by Geologist from Animal Collective.

We promise some other big names to come. ~40 bands, so 31 more to go…
Please, at least for the sake of Grace and me, do not make this like all of the other DC "festivals" and book shows at all the 21+ venues. I really want to see Travis…and I guess I already can't see Exit Clov…

RnR Hotel is all ages. Tell your friends. Travis is playing the RnR Hotel as are the Clov. You are saved. All three of the other venues are 21 and over.

We tried for the all ages venues, believe me. I went to war with the Black Cat, only to lose. And we would have had a 9:30 club show if the schedule worked out better. To their credit, Lisa and Seth seemed willing to work with us, the timing just didn't work out.
I guess they were just more interested in the prospects of a Carbon Leaf/Good Charlotte weekend!

Wait, what other festivals are u talking about? Besides Snailhook's, most of which I think are at underage venues and I doubt your tastes match his, and Six Points, what else is there?

Is this a band that people like?

10/12 the Frames, Iota
Hell yes, The Frames are a band that people like. Unfortunately, they will not be at the Iota on 10/12. Glen Hansard, the singer/frontman of The Frames, and his new side project The Swell Season will be. Which is something I posted a few pages ago.

Whoever was wondering about who is psyched for Dragonforce, I would be if they weren't playing the same night as Tool. I've wanted to see Tool for about four years now, and have just missed them several times. I can't pass up the chance to finally see them. I do certainly now regret passing up Dragonforce at Jaxx a few months ago, that's for sure.

I downloaded this from emusic last week but haven't given it a good listen yet - the bits I did listen to I really liked - reminded me of the quieter stuff on For The Birds which is my favorite Frames album
I've been on the lookout for it, but haven't had any luck. Looks like I'll have to order it online.

The Iota show is the first date in a small Swell Season tour here in the States. It's five days after The Frames finish up a tour of Ireland in support of their new album, which releases September 22 in Ireland. I'm not sure if I'll be able to wait for the stateside release, whenever that may be, or if I'll import a copy. :)
Lemonheads 12/14 black cat

Totally different lineup except for Evan obviously.
Taylor Davis w/ Johnny Goudie @ Staccato 9/22
Over The Rhine @ Jammin' Java 12/10
I was referring to Six Points. Last year they had one all-ages show at the Black Cat with Army Of Me which was great, but all the other shows were in 21+ venues. It was a serious bummer not to get to see Monopoli. The last time I checked, the Rock N Roll Hotel was 21+, so are you 100% positive? If it's all ages I will be very very happy. And I appreciate the effort anyway, I guess. I just wish there weren't so many 21+ venues around here.

sonic circuits dc is all ages at the warehouse, and the free folk phantasmagory III is all ages at 611 florida. the 20 buck spin was all ages in 2004, and split last year. get into the noise, psych, and doom metal scenes, we need more fans!

the rock and roll hotel is 21+ with an all ages option. initially, it was going to be all ages all the time, but the owners deem it a pain in the ass to deal with, so we're doing all ages for shows where it's crucial. i disagree with this, but i only book and work there, and have no financial investment, so my opinion is moot.

kayo dot/grails/wooden wand/kohoutek on halloween will be all ages, and say hi to your mom/metal hearts on 11/8 will be ages.

it does suck that most of the clubs are 21+ around here. you can blame a combination of capitalism, cheap club owners, and a lack of altruism for that. the wilson center days are long gone.
Blame the venues, not the promoters ;)

Hmmm… didn't realize this had changed to "as needed." Rest assured, all DAM! Fest shows at the RnR will be all ages, including the Clov pre-party.
order from road records in ireland!

i'm so pissed. i'll be out of town for both the iota show and the one in philly. grrr.

actual frames tour in the states won't be until spring 2007.

blame the LAWS, not the venues!
blame the LAWS, not the venues!
i think it's more like "blame economics".

you need to raise a certain amount of money, one way or another, to make a show economically viable. 21+ means you can sell alcohol, which is a huge money earner.

compounding the problems of the under-21 set is that they tend to have less disposable income (higher % of student, lower-paying jobs, etc) - so they wouldn't be able to afford the higher ticket prices that non-booze-selling events require.

there are a lot of well-off under-21s who would pay big bucks, just not enough of them. now if those kids could subsidize the others…
Laws have nothing to do with it. Venues need to make their $$$, pure and simple. Also, blame the venues for starting the shows late and getting us drunk earlier than we should.

While economics I'm sure play a part, to say that the laws have nothing to do with it is untrue. Laws have plenty to do with it. It is much less about money than it is about legality, safety and security.
