Precisely – money that does NOT go to the venue. ;)

And each underage person not only doesn't spend money on booze, but displaces a person who would (or at least might).

Betty, I'm sorry, but this "entitled to listen to live music" is just insane, I gotta say. Then hire the band to play at your house. Venues are not yet public institutions funded by tax money. Thank GOD. You get so many opportunities in D.C., I think there's a lot to be thankful for. Plus, you have 30 - 40 years of seeing bands after you turn 18 and/or 21. Lots and lots of music can be in your life….
Plus, the comments about running or booking a club not being hard?
You need to ask if you can go to work w/ an employee of a club for "bring your teenage show-goer to work day".
redsock - there are a few that take merch cuts.
So were you saying that the average concert goer dies somewhere between the ages of 48-61?

Right - shouldn't it be adjusted for people who have babies? ;)

Have they jumped the you know what?
I don't know, but I finally heard this band and they put me to freakin sleep. A friend gave me the "Plans" CD cuz it put him to sleep so I'm like "yeah sure I'll check it out"….Boooorriinng. Are they really that bad or are their other records that much better than this one?
If I had said 40-50 years, you would have slammed me and asked where all the 70 year old concertgoers are, you never see 'em.

I saw WAS play with Art Brut before, but they were billed as art brut 49. and sadly, no art brut songs. either way, was a great set. robocop krauss was a great act as well. ill cross my fingers that the NYC show added WAS also. i think its spinto band right now on the lineup.

I agree completely Bags. Plenty of bands play the 9:30 and/or black cat. try growing up in the bay area. most clubs were 18+ at the youngest, and if not 21+. I cant say the number of bands i missed and was surely disappointed, but when I was finally old enough to go to bimbo's, bottom of the hill, i guess the wait was worth it. i think the worst thing is if a band breaks up and i knew i could have seen them. ah well! life goes on.

i do remember having a beer or two with the members of the candyskins outside on the patio at the bottom of the hill. and plenty of bands, that dont have huge followings in the states, do play small bars.

its nice to be 32 and not wonder if the guy youre talking to is legal :D

This is why, though, the complaint about DC from the under 21s irritates me. I grew up in a major city (if you combine Tampa and St. Petersburg, as you should, it's top 25). There was NO club that wasn't 21+. Just didn't exist. I still saw bands at places like theaters, arenas, etc. But I was S.O.L. for small bands at clubs that served alcohol.

DC, however, has two great venues that are all ages, and a high majority of acts touring stop in one or the other (if not one of the 'major' venues). This is a blessing, appreciate it. [/QB]
Wovenhand and Bardo Pond just added to the 10/4 serena maneesh state theatre show.

of course by "better" you mean "more to my liking" - and if Plans didn't work for you, their other stuff probably won't either. i think their previous album, Transatlanticism, was much better - but not a total departure in style, so i doubt it's your cup of chai.

ahh… maybe. definitely risking overexposure, given that they played with franz ferdinand at the same venue earlier this year (and FF totally stole the show, not that DCFC wasn't good).

Umm, I definitely did NOT say it was easy to run a venue. One of my best friends semi-ran a venue immediately after he got out of high school. He worked his bottom off.
I DID say that it isn't that difficult (not easy, but not that difficult) to open shows for all ages. Having kids at shows isn't stopping those over 21 from drinking, and while they might be taking up the space of those who are paying for drinks, they are still paying the cover…so raise the cover charge one or two dollars and it'll even out…
