go see a band with the talent enough to tell a venue to fuck off if they try to silence their crowd. or just go see a band that promotes dancing. wsp comes to mind nicely. they rock dar, and if you're seen sitting at one of their shows there, you better have a damn good excuse.

bad acoustics is a fancy way of saying bad sound guy, or better yet, bad band.

Not always. Some rooms are poorly designed for amplification and there's only so much the sound engineer and/or the band can do to overcome it.
DAR is one of these places, it was designed for speaking engagements and non-amplified events long before loud amplified sound was the norm. Like the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, the room was designed to project voices throughout the room and is quite effective for non- and minimally-amplified performances such as the Down From the Mountain tour.

you're right, the distance was the problem. That makes sense too, because their music has an intimate feel to it. do you know if they have club shows planned for any time soon?
You really need to be close enough to catch intense energy from Lukas and Paul. Check out their Graffiti video for some idea. They are returning to the States in September, but their only East Coast date is Sept. 25th at the Bowery Ballroom.

should we be making another roadtrip to nyc to see them? :) and they were incredible when i saw them in new york. although the bowery just wont be the same as Tonic which was quite intimate. Paul had quite a bit of energy and he put on a great show, as well as the rest of the band as kurosawa mentioned.

cant comment on the merriweather show as i didnt make it on time, but hearing them from my cell phone, they were sounding quite great.
aside from the fact that this is not until JUNE 2006!!!, this should be a very interesting gig

WED OCT 12- THE WARLOCKS, THE BELLRAYS, THE GRIS GRIS $12 mainstage 8:30

the warlocks have been one of my guilty pleasures for the past couple years.

No, Steven Wilson is very fan-oriented and generally a good guy. SAme with the rest of the band. They do have that "prog" sound but I think they are infinitely better than Rush.. I've been following them since 1995. They are also one of the tightest live bands you will probably see all year.
Well, than I am very happy to stand corrected. Glad to hear that.

Funny you should mention Rush as that is one of the three bands whom I was thinking of with the others being Journey and Foreinger. Can't stand that shallow ash shit. As with most genres, there seems to be two different sorts of Prog Rock. The Mainstream crap that makes me cringe and then the other side of the coin such as Fripp, King Crimson and Porcupine Tree.

I'd like to see The Gris Gris. I missed them at the Warehouse a while ago.

holy shit…show of the year material. the gris gris played one of the best show i saw last year and released one of the best records i heard. the warlocks are always solid, and the bellrays bring it.

and jaguar, please don't mention rush in the same breath as foreigner and journey; they are completely different. aside from geddy lee's annoyingly shrill vocals and their post-1982 output, rush's instrumental talent blows the crap out of foreigner and journey (might as well throw in styx in there). i've even busted out some of the instrumental parts of "farewell to kings" and "2112" for some people, and they can't believe it's rush. they're no crimson, but they did have some good ideas.

and their first record is great in a retarded zeppelin kind of way.

Take it from a guy who loves shallow ass shit: Rush is far from shallow. Lifeson is the weak link instrumentally, and that's not all that weak.

lifeson is a great player indeed, but you could argue that he spawned the ridiculous shredding/ overplaying guitar styles common in the eighties and that it's his fault we had to listen to all those wankers doing whammy bar dive bombs.

i suppose you could, but i'd rather argue that it's eddie van halen's fault.
