I may just have to go to that show! Anyone know the other bands (Paper Doll, etc.)? And HIPS is a terrific local organization.
Thanks, Kurosawa – HIPS is a great local organization. I've been on the host committee for an annual HIPS event, and the people involved are inspiring. This particular need would not have occured to me, but it makes sense once you talk to folks.

Here's their website.

"HIPS mission is to assist female, male, and transgendered individuals engaging in sex work in Washington, DC in leading healthy lives. Utilizing a harm reduction model, HIPS' programs strive to address the impact that HIV/AIDS, discrimination, poverty, violence and drug use have on the lives of individuals engaging in sex work."
why don't we get rid of the societal sickness that motivates people to get a hooker, and put them out of business?

Don't know about Amateur Party and La Mita Violenta (I can ask Hugh on tuesday), but Paper Doll are (yet another) girl-punk band that sound almost exactly like the most melodic side of Sleater-Kinney…not bad, exactly, just not all that interesting. You can grab an mp3 here

Decahedron – the band formerly known as the Black Sea (ex-Frodus; Joe Lally of Fugazi) – are palying the Warehouse on 1-31 and the Black Cat on 2-24. I think Lally has been replaced.
Holy shit! All this time and I had no idea that Joe Lally was in The Black Sea. That's one of the bands that I got my UK friends into a little over a year ago.

Indie punk similar to early Sleater Kinney. Listen here . Tix are $10

I like this song. Anyone here know them?
The Gossip are pretty good but when they played the last time, a lot of people were sort of disappointed….if I remember correctly.

Kind of like The Kills meet the YYY's.
Eeew. I'm not so sure that's a good combo….

Where is this exactly?
if you go into AU off of mass ave entrance, it's in some random building toward the right. honestly, i can't give you an exact location.. just get there park in the garage and start asking people where the tavern is. they'll help ;)

Like Paige said, it is a bit hard to explain exactly where it is. But the Mary Graydon center is one of the building's on the campus' quad. On 1 end of the quad is the Library on the other end is the flaming cupcake (or the Kay Spiritual Center but it is round and has a flame on top). If you are facing the cupcake, Mary Graydon is on your left and the Tavern is inside. But ask any student, they will know.
Hey, the Tavern is where I saw Urge Overkill in 93! That's when Nash opened the show with, "Welcome to the lunch room!" Odd venue, but that was a damn memorable show.

thought they were very very disappointing at the last black cat show…the lead singer's awfully nice, and has a strong voice, but the music can't really back her up. it's basically just white-girl janis joplin blues with white guy "blues" guitar…

Not sure if this had been announced, but Grandaddy are back in DC and this time in Baltimore as well.

March 24 - 9:30 Club

They are playing with Saves The Day and The Fire Theft, don't know anything about these bands but hope they are good.

Should be at both shows.

saves the day are whiney emo heroes that the wannabe depressed kids listen to. their shows are pretty good though, lots of energy and the acoustic interludes are also pretty cool. the fire theft are alright; not crazy about them, but they're good and mellow. in my opinion grandaddy is the better of the three.
if grandaddy is the headliner, that's a definite show for me (at least the recher one)

if its saves the day….I might have to think about it
Swell - Feb 04 - Baltimore, MD - Talking Head

I just read that one of these bands has a formal connection (language used by allmusic.com) with Foo Fighters. I hope it is a former band member of Foo Fighters who left them for being so terrible.
