Just Announced

I prefer knowing that it's an early show in advance before I buy a ticket. If my work schedule screws things up (and I normally don't know until a day or 2 in advance), then I can't make the show. It's really annoying when they do this. Oh well.
wait, what? so that means that…theoretically…Sonic Youth will only play at the first show for about…an hour?
I'm officially pissed. This fucking sucks. I hate it when 9:30 does this.

Yea but I don't think that will be the case. Here's how I figure the schedule will go.
Doors 6:30
Be Your Own Pet 7:00-7:30
Sonic Youth 8:00-9:30

Then for the 2nd show, doors will open at 10:00. So you see, there's nothing to worry about! ;)
i honestly believe that Sonic Youth wouldn't do a second show if they thought it compromised the first show whatsoever

might even make them really intense in an effort to make sure that doesn't happen

I'm glad it's official then.

Explain to me in a logical way why this presents a problem?
if nothing else, i've been trying to get to a sonic youth show for years and i'm finally getting to see them. it's disappointing going to see a group like this who have put out this number of albums, and knowing that there is a cap on the show time that will in some way mess with the set. it's really not a huge deal though, i'm just greatful to be going. and i'm thinking about getting a ticket to the second show, too. which could be a mistake if they are going to play the exact same set twice. and if they're going to play something completely different, then it's going to suck not to be at both. but we really will not know.
the one time I saw them (2002, at the recher) they played an extremely short set (by my count it was an hour 20 at the most) so Im not sure having an hour and a half cap on the show will really mess with their set

I think Bearman's post above here more than sufficiently answers your question; however, I will elaborate if you insist. If both the early show and the late show had been announced at the same time, there's no way I would have willingly purchased a ticket to the early show as I vastly prefer late shows. I don't work a 9-to-5 job, and early shows can be difficult for me to make sometimes. Now I'm stuck unless I decide to try to sell my ticket or trade it or arrange to leave work early. Plus, with your standard "doors open at 7:30 show" or any late show, I can park for free at the Metro parking lot. With an early show, now, I'll have to pay for parking.

Okay so for arguments sake let's say the first show sold out quickly (as it did) and the band decides they would like to add a second show. Is the venue supposed to say no and disapoint all the people who would love a shot at buying tickets because the people who already have tickets feel like one show is going to some how suffer because of the other?

Sonic Youth are seasoned pros, they're not gonna short change one crowd because they add a second show.

We've done this plenty of times and I've never heard anyone complain about the quality of a performance based on the number of shows in a night.

As far as one show being early, well it gives you a chance to get to bed at a decent hour since the show is on a weeknight.

I just think the "I hate it when 9:30 does this." makes it sound like we're somehow screwing people when in reality we're trying to give you more chances to see your favorite bands.

Personally if it were my favorite band I'd snatch up tickets to each show and go to both, but that's just me.
On a happier note, it is now appearing that the Bob Mould show (w/band) that is happening on July 16th (Sunday) is actually a FREE show with multiple bands, including the Flaming Lips. Details are still being finalized, but it sounds like it will be pretty cool. Forum road trip anyone?
This Sonic Youth situation reminds me of the Great B&S shitstorm of '03.

I agree. I'm glad there are two shows.

Pretty sure this is it. And I hear that it'll be 21+. Shaping up to be an awesome day.

It is two days (7/15 and 7/16).

Lots of bands to choose from on 7/15:

Drive by Truckers (930 club)
Mission of Burma (Black Cat)
Siren Music Festival (in NY)

*shrug*
Starting to have regrets about buying that all good festival ticket.

damn, every time with you.

why do you always have to be so damn know itall every single time someone makes one little bad comment about the club.

so, someone buys a ticket to a show, thinking , like most shows, band goes on at 9:30 or so, then finds out they go on at 7pm. he has a right to be upset, in fact, people have the right to be upset for ANY reason. I live in Baltimore and if i had chosen to buy a ticket, i would have to take off work early to get to the show.

going to bed early? what a stupid reason, shadrach. as is "oh i'd just buy tickets for both shows" i know for one, i cant afford to do shit like that.

and yes, the 930 Club did this. this was their decision, not Sonic Youth's. and while the second show will probably make more people happy than angry, its bound to put a couple people in a crappy situation.

ever heard that , "you can't please everyone" saying. well, its true, so dont be surprised when sometimes you hear from the one(s) you didnt please. its not like he said he was never going to the club again. jeez.
Maybe a happy medium would be for the club to allow patrons who bought tickets for the early show to be able to trade them for the later show at their will. Seems like a win-win no??
