I was talking about Bands on the Run with somebody last night, we could not remember the name of one of the bands (turned out to be Soul Cracker), I thought that show was entertaining compared to most shit, they should do it again

Burnett looking for a real rock star
Sun Jun 6, 8:00 PM ET

Josef Adalian, VARIETY STAFF

Reality titan Mark Burnett is getting ready to launch his own rock 'n' roll take on "American Idol" – and he's recruited one of the Fox show's top producers to help him do it.

David Goffin, a three-year "American Idol" vet who most recently served as supervising producer of the hit Fox skein, has rejoined Mark Burnett Prods. He's in line to exec produce the new music-based project, which is expected to be pitched to networks within the next week.

Burnett's last project sparked a four-net bidding war, making it highly likely Burnett and Riggs won't have a problem finding a home for what they hope is their new sensation.

Neither Burnett nor his business associate and production collaborator, Conrad Riggs, were talking Monday, but industry insiders said Burnett is readying an edgier version of "Idol" focusing on rock music. But rather than finding the next Fantasia or Clay, the Burnett skein will search for a crooner who could step in as the lead singer of an existing, internationally known rock group.

News of Burnett's next skein – and the hiring of Goffin – will no doubt be interpreted as the latest chapter in the producer's cold war with Fox Broadcasting.

Spat erupted after Fox decided to launch a boxing-related reality show after the net failed to land "The Contender," the Burnett/Sylvester Stallone (news)/Jeffrey Katzenberg boxing skein set up at NBC. "The Contender" camp has loudly protested Fox's plans, all but accusing the net of stealing its format.

Burnett has since made it clear in public comments that he won't be suing Fox, but instead will pour all his efforts into producing a better show for NBC. Now, with the talent competish, Burnett seems ready to go after Fox's crown jewel – and abandon his previous philosophy against treading in familiar waters.

But while Burnett's skein will be talent-focused, it's expected to differ from "Idol" in several key ways.

For one thing, public voting is unlikely to determine the winner of the competition. The existing band will play a key role (a la "The Apprentice") – though viewers are likely to have some influence on the outcome.

Skein is also expected to devote more time to storytelling, giving viewers a better shot at getting to know the aspiring stars. Switching the genre to rock will also result in a different type of show, since "Idol" tends to favor pop singers with more mainstream sensibilities – though this year's winner, Fantasia Barrino, managed to transcend genres by singing a multitude of styles, include some rock.

Burnett skein may also hold international auditions, giving the skein a global feel (and the chance to be sold internationally). It will likely culminate with the winner immediately going on tour with the existing band, following a live televised concert finale.

Details of the skein could change depending on where the show lands.

Before joining "Idol," Goffin worked on Fox's "Combat Missions" and "Eco-Challenge" skeins. He was a member of the production team nominated for an Emmy last year for their work on "Idol."

Both Goffin and Burnett are repped by CAA.

I don't think it will be as entertaining if done for network tv, I imagine the Burnett one being a bunch of guys trying to be the next singer for Judas Priest or something, Bands on the Run at least documented some of what life must be like for most touring bands
Who on Earth is Kenin, and why are they headlining at the 930 club?
they look uh….promising?

Simplistic description? Sure, but we're not interested in complicating the things that don't really matter. We don't get off on glitter, we don't like wearing sunglasses at night, and we don't know what we think about record labels. What we do like is simple, and we like it a lot: we like being onstage, in the studio, on the road, and with our fans. If you want to classify our music, about the only thing that remains constant is our emphasis on the roots of the instruments we play - raw, acoustic guitars; drums; lots of different percussion; energy; experimentation. We play acoustic rock, and we play our asses off. We sweat, we move, and we try to give back to you a lot more than what you paid at the door.

Turning Sour Grapes Into a Silk Purse
By WARREN ST. JOHN

For managers of the Barnes & Noble store on Union Square, the realization that David Sedaris's reading on Wednesday night would not be the usual author appearance came at about 4 p.m., three hours before it was to begin. That's when the first Sedaristas began to arrive â?? young and old, hip and square, with briefcases and tattered backpacks, in gray bouffant or purple hair. They quickly filled the 350 folding chairs and the standing-room section on the loftlike fourth floor, then spilled onto the third floor, to watch on television monitors. Eventually, over 1,000 people jammed the bookstore, and many were turned away, including one woman who burst into tears.

Asked afterward what other author stirred such enthusiasm, Dennis Wurst, Barnes & Noble's manager of author promotions, raised his eyes to the ceiling in thought.

"Maybe Hillary," he said.

Mr. Sedaris, the author of books like "Barrel Fever," "Me Talk Pretty One Day" and "Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim," which was published last week, is the closest thing the literary world has these days to a rock star. His books â?? which often dwell on themes of childhood alienation tied to his being gay among straights, and to being the new face among the established after family moves â?? have sold around 2.5 million copies, according to his publisher, Little, Brown.

His work has been optioned by Hollywood, and he is among a tiny group of writers considered entertaining enough to appear regularly on "The Late Show With David Letterman." And while most authors live in fear that no one will show up at their readings, Mr. Sedaris, 47, regularly charges money and sells out the sorts of theaters that symphonies play in. On his last tour, in 2002, he filled Carnegie Hall, and at colleges he is a draw on par with the director Michael Moore.

"David has completely taken off, far and away beyond anybody else," said Steven Barclay, his speaking agent. "There are a lot of authors who sell a lot of tickets, but someone who can regularly hold 2,000- to 3,000-seat theaters â?? it's unheard of."

I bet Thirsty has seen the Lost Prophets live?
Yes, after listening to their CD I figured out the exact points in each song where the members would jump simultaneously. So I went. And I jumped. It was great.
Didn't they open for His Royal Partyness Andrew WK?

Indeed! Actually Andrew WK played first despite the billing, then erm, almost everyone left before the Prophets got 2 songs in.

How do you remember stuff like that?
