Why pay money? I dunno…maybe because you want to see a performer and support them? I mean, why does something have to be free? Badly Drawn Boy has mouths to feed at home, I think it's only fair that if he hauls his ass from the UK to do a show that he get something for it. Maybe that's a strange notion, but that's just me.
Do you get some sort of payment from the NYC tourism board for each mention you make of free shows in the city?

He does get something for it. As do everyone who plays these free shows. Your tax dollars as well as corporate funds got toward presenting such shows. The performer most likely makes their same rate no matter who it is paying them. I stand my my statement.

I do have a friend who works on the booking for the Celebrate Brooklyn series. I should probably ask her for a small annual promotions stipend.

how about because a band like shout out louds is not going to be playing any of those free shows. and some of those other bands listed are probably not playing any of the free shows.

and for someone who was complaining about the guy living paycheck to paycheck, telling everyone to see free shows isnt much better. are you that cheap you cant afford tickets to shows anymore? and youre hyping all these free nyc shows when youre in DC and hell you dont even go to the shows there and probably arent going to any of the free shows here either.

and just for the record - not all the summerstage shows are free either - granted there are some, but you wont be seeing keane at summerstage for free.
I know! All 3 are performing Pitchfork Festival, too. Dan Deacon should play in the afternoon at Whartscape :)

Isn't Whartscape just an evening thing?
Does anyone have more solid info on this? I've tried finding real details but haven't had much luck.

I'm planning on seeing the Drive By Truckers at Castle Clinton and Neko Case at Summerstage, and maybe Camera Obscura at Seaport.

I don't believe that one has to see every last show by every last band they're interested in. Of course people who have an unhealhy concert addiction probably don't understand that concept. And when I'm picking and choosing which shows I'm going to see, the price is a major factor. The fact that I'm fiscally conservative (and middle aged, and married to someone who can pull her weight financially) ends up helping me not have to live from paycheck to paycheck.

"you wont be seeing keane at summerstage for free."

Damn right I won't. You couldn't pay me enough to sit through a Keane show.

have you ever thought that just because someone doesnt live like you do, doesnt mean they have unhealthy addictions and need reality checks?
are you THAT close minded and egotistical? or is this just another one of yout self-loathing tactics to attack people who live the life you only wish you could still live? ;)
Something tells me it's an all day thing. On Dan Deacon's website it lists "12 pm" while the rest of the his tour dates are in the evening.

SATURDAY 07/22 12pm
Wham City: 316 E Oliver
Baltimore, MD
at WHARTSCAPE FESTIVAL
All Day Tons of Bands Killer Best
$5, All Ages/No Jerks

7/22 is a Sunday, though! I hope it he is truly playing on 7/21 so I can see all 3 bands!

which is closer? aberdeen or frederick?
depends. for folks in the DC area, probably frederick (about an hour up 270). for b'morites, aberdeen is the way to go. for you in annapolis, looks like aberdeen is a tad better (but not by much).

biggest problem is that these two shows are on tuesday and wednesday, so you'll have to deal with rush-hour traffic. actually, if you want to make it in time for the show you're probably going to have to not deal with rush-hour and leave before it hits. neither 270 nor 95 are nice to deal with between 5:00 and 7:00…
miss pretentious is from annapolis? hey, i have been hanging there a lot lately….i joined rams head's beer club and since then cant stay away from the joint. 59 more to drink!

I vote awful. (CC tops my list as worst live performers!)
I'm not hearing good things about the recent shows of 3EB - NOT that I've been asking! I'm leaving 1995 where it is.
Drink a six pack of Milwakee's Beast and save yer money!
