I didn't get one this week or last week.
I haven't seen one hit my account in over a month. I signed up with my other email and nada.
Asked Mr. Eddie, but no reply.

amen

he may be a 'good business man' but again - he's selfish there's no other appropriate word to describe him. His attitude to be the only one to 'rule the roost' is very apparent. Another other city council (DC caved under pressure - they are gullable and quite frankly stupid) would have laughed against his opposition - Silver Spring Maryland did just that.

[side comment - I am soooo glad to see that the upcoming Eels and Elbow show are at the 6 and I Synagogue]
Shyeah, what nerve of a businessman/entrepreneur to try to bolster his business interests in a competitive environment.

Seth is a lot of things, good and bad, but you can't deny the fact that he's a true DC guy, has been on the scene longer than most of the board have been alive, and is more responsible for the caliber of music that comes through town than anyone else. For the size of DC, there are plenty of alternatives, so go ahead and make your stand and don't attend his shows.

Giles, you seem like an angry man. Keep exploring that and see what you get.
no, what I'm angry about is that for a city that seems to be 'internationally attune' and should be a stop for UK/international bands those band promoters bypass DC the first time around since a) the 9:30 is very picky who they will book or not book, another venue would have taken that chance. Buzz should have a venue with an actual stage and we could have seen Simian Mobile Disco last year. It took two Baltimore Hot Chip shows before DC got a proper in town show. I'm just pissed that the tour dates for many UK bands doesn't include DC as often as it should - another venue would have filled in that gap - yet Seth and co. don't go the extra 100% or even allow a competing venue the chance. Thankfully the Rock and Roll Hotel is willing and able to book up and coming new UK bands, the Black Cat's recent inability to book any band of major interest is terribly lacking - although the AUTECHRE and BRITISH SEA POWER show are definately on my must see list.
Another thursday with no email blast to wake up to. :(

Third for me.

i wonder if the chances of being flashed by a drunk chick will be higher here than at other live music venues.

nice line, relaxer :)

giles is still bitter that seth didn't personally contact him and ask for his input on set times for last night. seth is such a douche.
You're missing the True Colors tour, Steve Miller Band, and the Taste of Chaos tour. I wouldn't lose any sleep over it :)

They are also playing in Alexandria at the Waterfront Festival the next day.
A less rusty bet is Glen Phillips, solo:

Wed, 04/02/08 Jammin' Java Vienna VA 8:00 PM
Maybe they bypass DC because they don't wanna play DC. :D

I live in NYC now (previously in DC) and had a lot of the gripes youre complaining about (and no this isnt why i left dc). so – heres what ive learned (and no it wont really help you).

most the UK bands that come through NYC are not playing 9:30 club sized venues the first time they come around. We have much more smaller venues that they can play here *and* attract a fan-base. Even tho I'd argue most these shows are filled with all ex-pats from the UK.

staying on topic:
The Wombats - 3/17 - The Annex (sold-out)
Ash - 3/17 - Music Hall of W'burg
Pigeon Detectives - Bowery Ballroom

ps most these bands play 2-3 cities max. NYC and SF/LA. There is a huge scene for them there. You may need to move if thats what youre looking for. And these bands WILL sell out the venues here whereas in DC its not as likely.

now how the hell did I miss that annoucement :(

Yeah, but it's an enormous joke. Even the Azalea Festival got better bands… and by better, I mean some American Idol thing, some country band, and maybe some kinda top 40 (ie: Sister Hazel) band.

Marrz is a shitheap, Soapbox is ok, but not great, and that's really all the venues anymore. =/
I never went to any of those places. The years I went they had shows at Bessies and Firebelly. There were also shows at a diner where the exchange was set up and some late night shows at random lofts and store fronts. That was 99-02. When were you livng there?
2002-2006. Firebelly never had anyone worth anything aside from maybe one halfway decent local band a year, and Bessies was pure pap.
Whomever mentioned Toad playing at Riverfront, Virginia Coalition will be as well.
I heard Crowded House is playing 3 nights at the club, May 2,3,4.

 Seriously? I would like to go to one of those.
so what was up with that strange blip of an annoucement for Groove Armada - was that just a mistake listing or will they will be touring the states in the near future - someone on another board said it's just a DJ gig, and not a full on concert set.

Its a NYC show is why you missed it and I tend not to post every single NYC show that is playing. If not - this board would be bombarded and its still a DC board last I checked ;) (i think there used to be a NYC concert thread for awhile - sweetcell im sure will confirm if thats correct ;) )

I did notice this and was somewhat intrigued
5/13 Filter @ Mercury Lounge

also 3/30, 31 - Beth Orton (acoustic shows) - NYC

Filter was the worst concert I ever attended. And I was dragged to Maroon 5 once.
