People, "Surprise! At the Club!" is a tagline that has been used in 9:30 Club ads since the early 1990s at least, probably started late 1980s after Seth and Rich bought the club, when acts that would normally play much bigger places instead do an underplay at the Club. It has nothing to do with ticket price, or when the show was actually booked, or even when it is announced. Big act in a small room, that is the surprise.

why are people all butthurt over the "Surprise! At the Club!" tagline?  did it touch you inappropriately?  raise your rent?  deny you backstage access?  sheesh, people, it's a marketing term and a damn innocuous one at that.

I don’t see a single person butthurt over it. I see one person asking, in a very disorganized way, if it really has any marketing value as a branding.

I can name a huge number of artists that would have been a surprise (and I did). The Foosballs were not among them.

Yeah, pretty much all of us guessed it. Whenever IMP needs a “big show” it’s Foo Fighters or some sort of Thievery Corporation residency.

I mean, I've seen Paul Simon, Lou Reed, Alison Moyet, etc….but nobody thought it was on that caliber.
