Elvis Costello and Company At Wolf Trap: All in Good Time

Tuesday, August 2, 2005; Page C02

Elvis Costello's concert Sunday night at Wolf Trap was a test of endurance: His three-hour set included a 10-song encore and a 13-song country mini-set with guest Emmylou Harris.

But even with such a lengthy nod to Nashville, the night was typical Costello: earnest vocals, tightly executed arrangements as his backing band, the Imposters, followed his every speeding guitar riff, and a casual sense of humor. In introducing Merle Haggard's "Tonight the Bottle Let Me Down," he joked that earlier in life his mission was "to rid the world of alcohol – by drinking it!"

While Costello's fervent energy built momentum through his set, some of the evening's best songs were exercises in restraint. He, Harris and bassist Davey Faragher clustered around a single microphone to sing the Stanley Brothers' "Gathering Flowers for the Master's Bouquet," accompanied solely by Costello's guitar and a violin. And Costello's mellow vocals harmonized seamlessly with Harris's on a cover of Chris Hillman and Gram Parsons's "Wheels."

Not surprisingly, there were several tributes to Parsons, Harris's partner early in her career, from a tender duet of "Love Hurts" to a majestically melancholy version of the Rolling Stones' "Wild Horses," which Parsons recorded with his Flying Burrito Brothers. But even in a set so packed with covers, Costello's own material was the most memorable, as he closed the night with his passionate antiwar song "The Scarlet Tide," with a haunting plea to "bring the boys back home."

Did anyone catch his show with EmmyLou?

I was wondering the same…

and what the…2006 show announcements? Crieky. I'm still penning Oct. '05 dates.
Yeah I'm kicking myself for not going. Heard good things about the Philly show as well.
Had lawn seats to the EC show…it was terrific. A searing version of Chelsea was an early set highlight..but it was the choice covers in the never-ending encore that stole the show (Wild Horses, Gathering Flowers, Love Hurts…all with Emmylou).

Wish I would have splurged on seats in the barn.
Argh. Sounds great!

elvis was about 50x better than the last time i saw him. he played for a solid 3 hours, about half to a third with harris. she was really really good. he told some good stories, just a solid show all around, and i'm not a huge fan

goddamn, i knew that elvis costello/emmylou harris show was going to be great. i would have gone but my band was recording all day. i saw elvis at wolf trap in 2002 and he blew me away…and i'm not the biggest costello fan. been on a big emmylou kick lately.

Apparently. I searched their name once and got a link to an absolutepunk.net story and nearly died laughing.
this would be a fine time for the real Cartel to bitch slap those fakers and force them to change their name seeing as they are established act using that name in the area… no name sullying can be had!

I'm pretty sure Fico said they have. Still, I saw the other Cartel's CD in Tower the other day. If I didn't know any better, I probably would have bought it. They should really jump on this soon, if they can.
Juliana Hatfield is doing a Revolution Records in-store on Sat. Aug.13th at 4PM

I would go to that in a hearbeat, but won't be in town.
I haven't been to Revolution in months. How is their stock doing? It was pretty thin last I was there.
neither have I, mainly for $$ reasons

I must stop by in the next week or so - also, don't be afraid to email them and ask for stuff - they will gladly special order just about anything and, as I've said before, their prices are about as good as I've seen in the area

Re: CARTEL Show 8/18/2005

Dear Sirs and Madams:

I have recently learned of a band scheduled to perform at your club on August 18, 2005 using the name CARTEL. Unfortunately, my clients Ed Barnabas, Mark Hemingway, Francisco Lazzaro, Luke Mangels and Brian Leatherman also perform as CARTEL.

It is possible that you are unaware of this conflict, so I believe that we should bring this matter to your attention.

My clients have common law trademark protection over the name CARTEL in the state of Maryland. Therefore, we must request that you immediately cease and desist promoting any show featuring any other band performing as CARTEL.

Likewise, we must request that you not permit this other band to perform at your establishment. Should you continue promote the bandâ??s infringing use the mark, my clients will be forced to bring legal action against your club, including but not limited to an action for vicarious trademark infringement.

I feel obligated to inform you of their rights to prevent future problems.
My clients and I hope to resolve this situation amicably and avoid any further legal remedies. Please respond by letter indicating your intention to cease and desist the promotion of this infringing use of the mark CARTEL, or any confusingly similar mark, by August 4, 2005.

Best regards.
Far be it for me to give you any advice about your band, Fico, but I would back off the lawsuit kick. I checked out the other Cartel online, and they've posted a picture where their singer was bleeding from an on-stage wound. It was blood, Fico…honest to goodness blood! I don't think you want any part of that…
Have you considered having your lawyer contactthis other band or their management as opposed to threatening venues who happen to book them?
